Flatt & Scruggs' "Town and Country" LP

This week's tune was written by Earl Scruggs and released on Flatt & Scruggs' 1965 Columbia album titled "Town and Country."

I don't have much to write about Nashville Blues--I tried to find more info about it online, but couldn't come up with much. I DID learn that there are several other tunes by the same name (all with lyrics) so it can be a pain to search for more info!

This tune is an instrumental, played in Dm tuning (aDFAD).

Here is the basic version at a little slower pace, my first attempt at a D minor tune, who wasn't inspired by Earl and the boys on the first Circle album ?

I arranged the song Red Rocking Chair in D-minor tuning using many of the same licks that Earl used in Nashville Blues, because the melodies are kind of similar. I recorded both tunes as a medley. banjohangout.org/myhangout/med...archived=

I've been playing this tune since  1975, after hearing it on the first "Circle" album. Learned it from the Scruggs book....one thing Earl doesn't  tell you is........when you play the two beats in D major, fret the second string at the fourth fret (I think), even though you don't pick that note (I hope I got that right, I'm in Portugal on vacation with no banjer)!!

It makes a difference to the sound, try it and see. I'll try and post a version  when I get home.

Oops, I think I meant the THIRD string, fourth fret, to stop a dissonant ring!

I spent the whole morning playing the tune again and again until finally I was able to shoot this take in the afternoon. Not a fully orthodox version. I threw in a small improv as well. Hope you like it:

Here's one I recorded a little while back in the incorrect tuning!  I used open D tuning (as in Reuben).  All sounds ok (I think) until the chimes at the end which end up, of course, a major chord!  Doh!
