This week's song was written by little-known artist, but it turned out to be a very popular tune. Bill Browning was born in Wayne County, West Virginia in 1931. In 1958 his band "Bill Browning and the Echo Valley Boys" released a single, and the B-side of that was the song "Dark Hollow" which Bill wrote.
It was popularized by the Grateful Dead, but it has also been recorded by Ralph Stanley, Del McCoury, the Kentucky Colonels and many more bluegrass groups.
Typically sung in C, but like any vocal tune you'll have to play it in whatever key works best for your singer!

There is a very nice arrangement in C by Hans Holzherr on my website that I fooled with and posted with Hans' permissions several years ago.
Hans does some brilliant arranging and I'm always happy when he permits me to use them for my website...Jack p.s. sometime in the near future I'll post Bill Keith's arrangement; it's brilliant as Bill always is

One of the best versions I've ever heard of this tune is on the Ricky Wassen CD with JD Crowe picking the banjo I think it is one of the best banjo breaks I've ever heard . I like the tempo of their version also.

Does anybody have a tabbed-out version of Bill Keith's break on the Muleskinner album? There's this bluesy lick he does at the end of his solo that I've never been able to figure out...

I just received your email offering to take my paper tab of Bill Keith's Dark Hollow and put it into Tabledit. I never let any one do my Tablediting for me. Just be patient and you'll get it when I'm finished. Or, you could do it yourself. I see by your profile that you're new to banjo playing and tabbing so keep up the good work Heath...Jack Baker
