Key of D – aDADE (double C – gCGCD – capo 2)
In this, Tunetorial number 10, Dan "Clawdan" Levenson teaches Needlecase. This is one of Dan's favorites. It is often played at jam sessions and is not to hard to master or develop.
In this and all of the Tutorials, Dan plays the tune three times through up to speed then slow starting with a basic version and building to an advanced one. Then Dan plays the basic version and breaks it down phrase by phrase. Same with the advanced.
This is tune number 31 tabbed out in Dan's newest book "Old-Time Favorites for Clawhammer Banjo" (MelBay 30224). Tab and standard notation with 2 cds of banjo and fiddle audio tracks. The fiddle notation and mandolin tab can be found in my companion book “Old Time Favorites for Fiddle and Mandolin” (MelBay 30225).
An easy one if you know your basic scale.

Dan and I would love to hear any feedback you have on these videos, so feel free to post or email us. Our goal here is provide a steady, affordable way for people to learn a new clawhammer tune weekly (or as often as they'd like).
If you're working on the tune, record yourself and post it below--we'd love to hear your progress!

Cool Lew! Thanks for posting. This give me an opportunity to start "teach" through feedback. Hint, anyone who posts, I'll do my best to comment and guide unless you say not to.
SO, nice tone and sound of the tune, good choice of notes and clean but still sounding banjo-y.
Two things I notice position wise is that you are looking hard at the left hand which tends to make us think too much and your neck hurt. Also, remember that comedian "Jeff"? His comment, "I tried to make orange juice from concentrate once and all I got was a headache!" Some truth to that so start to let your left hand do the work and not have to look so much. (Next week's tunetorial may help with that - concentration on scale and left hand position). The other is that you seem to have a pretty "open" right hand and mine is more compact.
Musically, while new, it is pretty paced. Try listening to some other versions of the tune (I always liked Bob Carlin's one) and start to recognize where all those eighth notes are really pushed and pulled against the metronomic value of the notes.
Overall, I think it sounds good and is great for a "take one". Thanks for posting!
Play Nice,
Dan

I'm not too thrilled with my performance here, but it's kinda cute.

I like the way the tenor works with your 5 string, and the hounds are of course scene stealers. Thanks for sharing.
