In this, Tunetorial number 9, Dan "Clawdan" Levenson teaches Ebenezer. This one will be a challenge to most of you. It has some fancy up the neck tricks that make it more intricate than your average fiddle tune. I must admit that while not one of my personal favorites, it is a tune that is enjoyed by many and thus an “Old Time Favorite” that is often played when jam sessions get into the key of G. So, enjoy this challenging tune.

In this and all of the Tutorials, Dan plays the tune three times through up to speed then slow starting with a basic version and building to an advanced one. Then Dan plays the basic version and breaks it down phrase by phrase. Same with the advanced.

This is tune number 18 tabbed out in Dan's newest book "Old-Time Favorites for Clawhammer Banjo" (MelBay 30224). Tab and standard notation with 2 cds of banjo and fiddle audio tracks. The fiddle notation and mandolin tab can be found in my companion book “Old Time Favorites for Fiddle and Mandolin” (MelBay 30225)

You can purchase the video lesson (for unlimited streaming and download) here on the Banjo Hangout for $6. Get it here >

Dan and I would love to hear any feedback you have on these videos, so feel free to post or email us. Our goal here is provide a steady, affordable way for people to learn a new clawhammer tune weekly (or as often as they'd like).

If you're working on the tune, record yourself and post it below--we'd love to hear your progress!

hi eric/dan- have you found that these lessons are meeting your expectations?  by that i mean the number of participating members?

just curious.

i only ask because it seems to share the now competitive time slot of the original TOTW.

I've noticed that as well. Doesn't seem to be appropriate timing to me. This should come out on Mondays, not Fridays, in my opinion.

I'll second - or third - that suggestion; I've thought about commenting on the timing a few times recently.  I don't quite see why the Tutorial needs to be posted the same day as the TOTW, especially since it is usually dated two days later (this one was posted on the 18th, but dated the 20th).  Why not just go ahead and post it on Sunday or Monday?

It's probably not a big deal, but since there is (to my knowledge) no compelling reason why it should be posted on Friday, why risk drawing attention and participation away from the Tune of the Week?

Based on the number of responses to these tunetorials, I highly doubt we're drawing participation away from the TOTW.

I posted them on Friday because it's practical for me to do so--that's the same day I post the bluegrass tunetorial, and I don't work on Sundays. The Banjo Weekly newsletter goes out first thing Monday morning, so I have to have the tunetorials already live before then.

It's worth noting that initially I wanted to make the tunetorial series somehow work "with" the TOTW series--include a lesson with the post, or something along those lines. But that idea didn't go over well with the clawhammer crowd. I do wish the two series could work better together...

Thanks for the reply Eric.

Personally, I never anticipated a "fee based lesson" (Clawhammer Tunetorial) would siphon away participants from a "free lesson" (TOTW).  Rather I would have expected the opposite, and you'd get less participation by having both share the same day.

But if its working, then its working.
