This week's tunetorial is for "Crying Holy Unto the Lord" -- a gospel number that is very popular in bluegrass circles. I've heard versions by Flatt & Scruggs, J.D. Crowe, Bill Monroe and Del McCoury--and I'm sure there are more!
The tune is often credited to Irene Amburgey, who performed under the name Martha Carson--but I think it's just a traditional tune that she popularized. Irene performed from the 40's-80's, a white rock and roller who sang gospel tunes in a style that was ahead of its time in many ways (see her video below).
This tune is typically sung somewhere from G to B. Banjo players just play it in G and slap a capo on if needed. Scruggs did it in G and A, Big Mon in Bb, J.D. in B.... gotta go wherever the vocalist needs you!
