Here's our third in this series of tune lessons. This week Dan teaches "Whitesburg"--a very cool A tune from his latest book Old-Time Favorites for Clawhammer Banjo
The video lesson ~30 minutes long. In it Dan plays the tune 3 times through - basic to advanced versions - up to speed, then slower. He then plays the basic and advanced versions slower yet and breaks them down into small phrases so you can learn it too!
As an extra in this video Dan breaks down Drop Thumb technique and what is often called the "Galax Lick".
You can purchase the video lesson (for unlimited streaming and download) here on the Banjo Hangout for $6. Get it here >
Dan and I would love to hear any feedback you have on these videos, so feel free to post or email us. Our goal here is provide a steady, affordable way for people to learn a new clawhammer tune weekly (or as often as they'd like).
If you're working on the tune, record yourself and post it below--we'd love to hear your progress!

This is a great idea! Hopefully there will be enough interest to keep these going for a while. When I get a little better at playing I would like to take advantage of these lessons!

Can we hear the tune anywhere? I can't find it in the archive or on YouTube.
Thanks.

You mean on fiddle? Because I play it full out at the beginning of the video. There is a fiddle disc with the book as well, but just saying. Email me off list and I'll provide an mp3 of the fiddle version if you like.

There is a terrific version of Whitesburg on an album by Ricky Staggs called "That's It". It's a great album but hard to find.

Sorry if i have missed something obvious but why do i seem to feel like i have missed something between 9 and 10 minutes. Dan refers to using / not using drop thumb while fretting at the fifth fret and then seems to fret the second string at the first fret which i dont recall seeing when he was breaking it down slowly??
