I'm working with the mighty Dan Levenson to do a weekly series of clawhammer lesson videos, and this is our first one!
Dan's newest Mel Bay publication, "Old Time Favorites for Clawhammer Banjo" features 62 tunes, and it's his goal to do a weekly video teaching each of the tunes. In the videos he teaches the tune visually and by ear, playing through each part and showing what both hands are doing. No tab provided--this is a by ear learning process!
You can purchase the video lesson (for unlimited streaming and download) here on the Banjo Hangout for $6. Get it here >
Dan and I would love to hear any feedback you have on these videos, so feel free to post or email us. Our goal here is provide a steady, affordable way for people to learn a new clawhammer tune weekly (or as often as they'd like).

Good series. I'll check it out each week. I like it. And Dan and Zepp have the "banjo expression" down pat...

I really love the idea and most likely I will purchase a few of the lessons along the way. However...... We all know Dan can play well so the video of him playing a tune well comes as no surprise to any of us. I think it would have been more helpful to see him actually teaching a section of the song. And to be more specific I would love to see the lesson begin from a simple melody advancing to a more complicated arrangement. I love the idea of no tab and learning by ear.
From a strung out tab junkie trying to break free.

I think that's the content of the full lesson....If you're at the stage where you can play fiddle tunes, this video should be more than adequate to learn from.

No, if you click on the pic to the right it takes you to the lesson page and the lesson is described there. 20 minutes with a lot of detail and demonstration.

I love the idea. If the lessons are anything like the "Clawhammer from Scratch" DVD's, I'll vouch for these sight unseen. In those lessons, he does walk you through the process of learning a song: melody>chords>basic claw>kitchen sink claw.
On another note: in May he had 4 workshops over 2 days at Bernunzio's in Rochester, NY. I am so bummed that I did not learn of it until today, hopefully next time I'll play closer attention.

THanks for the plug. Sorry we didn't meet Maj. Some talk of coming back up but nothing firm.
I"m having some issues getting used to the video format but getting better each one! And your feedback helps make each better.
Play Nice,
Dan
