Somehow, the head had slid down under the tension hoop.
My first thought was to undo most of the hooks, leave the few remaining as loose as possible, soften the head by leaving a damp towel on it, and try tug the edges up with my tiny lockable forceps.
But I figured, what the heck, may as well take it all the way off.
Nice big flat waterproof surface, the bath tub.
So I set it in there, placed an empty coffee mug on it to hold it under, and ran several inches of water into the tub.
This morning, went to take it out, and it is gone. No sign of it, anywhere!
One possibility is that Santa's elves snuck in the high-efficiency furnace exhaust ( no chimney here), and took it to the north pole workshop, to make a rat-a-tat drum for someone on the "Nice" list.
Other possibility is that some [ EXPLETIVE DELETED ] simply pulled it out and ATE the whole thing!
But, who would DO such an evil deed?
And, how did they get past my watchdog?

She claims she didn't hear, see, or especially taste anything out of the ordinary.

I have six dogs, and 5 of them would rather have a rawhide chewy than just about any other kind of treat.
Did she eat the flesh hoop too? One of my dogs has eaten some remarkable things.

Maybe she's like my Millie and didn't chew on it too much before she swallowed it. If so, she might poop the whole thing out.

Now, that might be the start of a new secret formula for great banjo tone... and/or a new verse for "Rye Straw"

You might have a perfectly stained hide head in your back yard. Folks here keep asking how to stain a head, you might have the solution.

Dogs will eat anything. I set a $2000.00 pair of hearing aids on a table once, went to answer a phone call, came back and my dauschund had chewed them all to rat---- !

Ya I'd be looking around the yard. You may get the whole thing back. Of course, you banjo will sound like sh...well, you get the idea...

tenderized rawhide chew. You'll find out soon enough when she passes it...
banjered - Posted - 11/27/2013: 11:21:52
Funny!
I read lots of comments about how long to leave the hide under water. I just put it in warm water until that particular hide is pliable enough to put on the banjo, usually in about five minutes, more-or-less. I can't think of any advantage to leaving it in water any longer than just pliable enough. In fact, maybe the longer soak extends out the drying time, or softens up the head so much it is too easy to overstretch it. Just passing, non-scatological thoughts...Banjered

I have a head that I bought a few years back that I put on an 11" rim and did not like the sound at all... I went back to remo plastic heads basically...
Maybe I could make it into rawhide chews for the 2 dogs!
I will sell it most likely just joking around here... My dogs would not go anywhere near the bathtub though... they know that is a place of "water torture" as they get baths when they roll in something bad.
(That is not my dog in my profile picture but maybe he ate your head!)

Mike:
Don't worry: the head just dissolved.
Did you save the bath water? If so, all you have to do is put it in a big soup pot, and boil the water off. Then you will have the head back!
This takes a while, but I'm sure your dog will appreciate the extra humidity it will add to your home.

Oh, it never occurred to me to boil out the bath water.
Ahh, too late now.
gmo - Posted - 11/28/2013: 12:38:20
Yeah, especially don't do that while the head is still attached to the banjo !!!LOL!!!

I grew up with a Drummer as a Father, and there were aways heads ( snare drums, street drums, bass drums) soaking in the bathtub, taking precicence over all else. He knew what he was doing.

in the stomach acid of a hound, yes.
In cold water for six hours? No.
banjered - Posted - 11/28/2013: 17:03:47
Ha! The evidence is building. However, I am doubtful that a jury of your hound's peers will convict him. He might countersue about banjo ear damage, musical abuse, that sort of thing. Plan B, dead ahead! Banjered

For those of you who really, REALLY care:
Enough of the snow had melted off the lawn, that I could go out there and collect no fewer than 3 dozen separate lumpydumps of puppypoo.
And one of them was quite a bit lighter in color than the rest, almost as if it was composed largely of something which had originally been very light colored.
Unfortunately, it seems that the collagen (or whatever it is that holds a rawhide head together) has been digested out.
One might imagine some sort of spreadsheet, where, when the total cost of items destroyed by a dog surpasses a certain total, the computer automatically prints a Death Warrant.
However, like most people with pets, the total cost is not a consideration.

I'm too lazy to go find a piece of pipe and beat her to death.
Besides, when she's not destroying everything she can reach, she's as good a puppy as she can be, and a lot of fun.

Haha. Timely. I awoke this morning to find my kelpie had eaten half (she left the other half in the kitchen, to taunt me, no doubt) of a bloody expensive clifford essex parchment. Still considering whether I should skin the dog in retribution.

They're originally sheep dogs, but neither do they make them out of sheep.

Should you decide to skin the dog, don't take anymore than it takes to replace what she spoiled. When you take her to the vet, you can tell them it was a banjccident.
