Young feller at the festival this weekend was admiring the Squared Eel 2.0 banjo.



Told me he already HAS  a banjo, but one of the rectangular inlays is missing, so he can't play it because it doesn't fret right, when the string gets bent down into the recess.



 



Seems he couldn't afford to have the local luthier find or make a replacement.



So, I advised him to fill it in with a little wood putty, and a piece of an old credit card, trimmed to fit.





And, especially, the piece with the hologram, because that's even cooler  !



The rest of the card could make good flatpicks for his guitar.

A credit card is probably the perfect, proper inlay material for a Squared Eel, but if you want something that looks like pearl, and doubles as a guitar pick, use a... guitar pick! I used a Fender (heavy) pearloid pick for the (sloppy, but you get the idea) bear inlay here:
