Crested Hens is a Cape Breton Tune normally left to more sensitive instruments like Violin and Guitar but I decided to come up with an arrangement as it is a favorite at the local irish jam and I needed to play along.  I took the less is more approach which doesn't necessarily work on banjo.  I'm learning to play along with my backing tracks through cramped up headphones so hopefully my timing will come in due time.  The Nechville has a bassy tone.. I plan to make some more recordings with more treble.  Work in progress.. Hope some enjoyment comes from it.. thanks for checking me out.. Kirby

Wow, this is nice!  I enjoy Crested Hens as a tune and hearing it come through the banjo gives it a nice clean articulated sound.  I think in a jam setting you are really going to add a lot to this tune.  Not a chance that you tabbed this beauty out, is there?

not  tabbed it out as of yet but I've been considering it.. It would just be a handwritten tab.. I haven't jumped into tabledit yet but hope to learn it after I get my credit cards paid off ya know.. thanks for the response.  I will send a link to you if I get it tabbed..

Nice job on the banjo : )  This was the first tune I learned on guitar after I bought my guitar. We've been playing it on 2 guitars around here--such a pretty tune.

Cathy Moore has a great version on her web site, Banjo Meets World.  The handwritten tab is still there.  I used her version as a base for the attached tab.  We play this as a waltz at our contra dances, though I think the original is in 6/8 time, perhaps more of a slip jig.  The tuning is double-C, and the tune is in C minor in the tab if no capo is used.  Our fiddler plays it in E minor, so I capo at the 4th fret.  The tab is set up that way, though you can play it open as well.

There is some tricky fingering in the 3rd measure of the A part and the 1st measure of the B part where 3 downstrokes in a row are needed for the melody.  Adjust it as you see fit.  Email me through the Hangout if you want a matching MP3.
