Greetings people of earth!

As a clawhammer player who’s allow terribly interested in the metal scene I’ve decided to smash these two genres together.

The first song I decided to “arrange” is a song by the Swedish band Ghost called Ritual.

I really don't like metal at all in it's natural habitat, but I think what you have done with it is really brilliant. I like it way better than the original, and I think it's really excellent clawhammer playing.

 But, hey,  from the topic listing, I thought this was a kind of metal covering for one's banjo--maybe a case, or just a metal head.  The later might give an interesting sound!?!?!

Great arrangements.  I also like lots of metal.  Just goes to show that music is so universal.

I agree with Lew H that your topic title ("metal cover on banjo") makes me think of  something about the mechanics of the banjo - a metal banjo rim or something.  Perhaps worth re-naming:  "Banjo covers of Metal songs" or whatever.

I don't think you should re-name the thread. If I had known it was metal songs, I probably wouldn't have looked at it, since I'm no fan of metal in its original form. This way I discovered your really excellent versions of these songs.

Very cool arrangements, and well played! Good take on the source material--you capture the essence of the songs with no sense of novelty, just playing them as two cool songs. And I see by the Youtube notes that you're having a go at "Capillarian Crest" by Mastodon? That would take some doing, anything by Mastodon is going to give you time-signature whiplash...

I've been on a big Sepultura kick lately--rhythmically it might translate well to some frailing, but it'd probably be a challenge to match the heft of their sound--maybe with a cello banjo?

Most inspiring rock'n'roll-related banjo discovery since I stumbled upon Phillip Roebuck. Thanks for posting, Erling!

A little off-topic, but reminds me of a post I came across here (banjohangout.org/archive/86583) discussing reggae/mento. A Jamaican player was spotted with a chain draped over the head of his banjo for a "percussive effect." Wish I could hear a sample...

I listened to this a few days ago and meant to reply. Sorry! - I really liked it, I think your doing something that has long been needed, that is you are doing a genre pretty much uncovered on banjo. Great job.

Good call, Mark--banjo drifts in at about the 4 minute mark--strange texture after hearing a big ol' hardcore breakdown.

But when it comes to banjo meets metal, the most unexpected example for me is the appearance of a banjo solo (albeit Scruggs style as not per the topic at hand) in a black metal song, of all things (solo starts at about 3:15):

I'm not near the arranger of tunes you are, so I'm not going to step up to the plate any time soon. You do have me brainstorming though, trying to think of good metal covers to put together. You ought to do "Jotun" by In Flames or something.

I do think one could play "St. Vitus Dance" by Sabbath in a convincing old-time style.

That's so great. There are several In Flames songs that would probably work well, they're usually quite melodic. Are you really trying to arrange "Capillarian Crest" by Mastodon, or did I completely misread things? I was listening to the song on my jog yesterday--pretty complex, would be a challenge!

Yeah, My goal is to arrange Capillarain crest, some time in the future. But with work, kids and other recreational activities, I'm finding it hard to start the process.
I just want to live in a cabin and play my banjo! Damn you life, what happened? :)
