I'm sure alot of us will no doubt throw around the words "genius", "Great", "Best", etc......but I'm curious to see, if you could just say ONE word about Earl Scruggs, what would it be?....................I say "Professional".

I say "mesmerizing." Whether he's giving an interview or jamming or performing, I can't help but just stare.

Phenomenal (sort of like professional in that it covers both his music and his persona).
I wish I had Scruggsicity!!
There are times when I just feel like I am not Scruggsable.
But I am a Scruggsonian or Scruggsite - not sure which I like better for the religion I practice. But you get the idea.

FUN! What I like about Earl was just not his banjo, he was a down to earth and humble .guy.

BRAVE......He veered off the expected course later in his career.....to explore different music experiences.....he took heat for this

Yeah Rick - and look where Fleck has gone. Way beyond what Earl caught flack for. Times have changed.
I love those old home videos of Earl in candid sessions with friends. You can just tell what a wonderful person he was. Especially for a megastar.

He was the "master" at the 5-string. So my word is "master".

I like Roll Model - best play on words I have heard in a while. Creative.

The "Sweeney" of the 20th century
(Joel Sweeney, that is)

Gentleman.
As far as his musical talent went, words can not describe what he could do. I had the chance to visit Earl and Louise at their home once. He played my banjo some. As much as I have listened to his playing for the past 30 something years, I could not comprehend the depth of the raw talent this funny, engaging gentleman was blessed with, until I actually saw it in real life.

Innovative. I would have loved to have been around him when he was creating all of the great licks and classic breaks to songs that we still try to emulate today.

I agree with Ron.The world already has conferred the one-word iconic status that marks the great. The single name ,"Earl"is recognized and evokes all of the attributes and acheivements of this fine man we all loved.

All of the above words describe him well. IMHO, we canl just call him EARL. Nuff said.

To steal a saying from my friend John Mark Batchelor, Earl was or is a Hoss Cat.

Resourceful.
He used what God gave him and made the best of it. He used what he had around the house and made D tuners, which led to some memorable licks. He wanted to play in other keys and found that a hairpin could be hammered into the neck to do the trick. He didn't wait for his big break, he just did what he needed to do with what he had. This is what we all should be doing!
