I just posted this notice about scheduling our first two online banjo contests. I would like to decide on what the contests will be for August and September as well. Any ideas?
I'm thinking I'd like to do a couple contests for beginners--maybe a Scruggs-style contest for August, and a clawhammer contest for September. Any idea what the song should be (if we want to restrict it to a particular song at all), how to determine a beginner, etc?
Let me know what you think!

Here's what I was thinking for the Aug/Sep contests:
If we do restrict the contest to beginners, I'm not sure what the criteria for a beginner should be. Should we let people self-police? Say "beginner means you've only been playing for X years or less?" Hmmm....

I wonder what kinds of rules apply at real world contests. Are there beginner contests out there and what are the criteria? In the end, you may have to propose some arbitrary rules and see what kind of push back you get from the community.

I don't think it's possible to be too much of a beginner, Vern!

Just wondering how folks would feel about a posthumous entry in the first BHO Banjo Contest in memory of David Hum. In light of his many contributions to the Hangout, his love for banjo music and his inspirational style and character - I think it would be very a fitting gesture.

I like the idea of online banjo contests, and to start with beginners. I think we can the players decide themselves if they are beginners or not. I don't think a more skilled player would cheat and call himself "beginner" just to win a "beginner contest". Perhaps there should be some criteria for "beginner" and why not just set 1 years experience of banjo playing. I think the BHO crowd is a strong power so if anyone cheats he/she will soon be get a bad reputation.

There's no prizes, but how about a virtual 'ribbon' icon that shows up on the homepage and posts of the folks who win and or place? Just a thought.....

I had thought of the same thing, John. I'll probably do something along those lines.

I think this is a great idea, Eric.
In response to the question of what is a beginner, I know there is resistance to any sort of grading system, but I really think it would catch on. There are discussions about when one is good enough for certain jams, so what's the difference?
You have the players Union, you could make it a sort of Guild where people can evaluate their progress based on the judgement of really good banjo players they may never get to meet otherwise. The key is to let people who don't want to participate don't feel put out.
