So, I'm in a place where I don't have my banjo, but at the same time, I just want to do something that will still help me learn more.

What do ya'll do when your banjo isn't around, but you still want to practice...

Listen to the type of music you like to play. Sit back, have a cocktail or two, close your eyes and visualize it. Almost as good as actually playing.

Get on the BHO and look around.  You will learn lots of things that are banjo-related.

That's when you need one of those little handy-dandy thingamajigs that's just like a 5-string banjo (the 5 strings, anyhow, sort of) but a lot shorter and quieter and is worn on the belt or thereabouts, IIRC. Someone prolly knows the name.

I tend to hum fiddle/banjo tunes.

My wife sometimes makes note of this by humming along ... rather loudly.

I do other things when I don't have my banjo in my hands.

Months of learning on there and sometimes you have to watch it a couple of times then try it on the banjo later.

I travel a lot and always have my Eleuke Peanut with me. I play tenor so I have it tuned like a mandolinand I can learn tunes on the plane, in the lounge, on a shuttle, etc. It has a built in preamp and and MP3 input to play along with a recording. I am going to play around with tuning it to double dropped C and use it for learning melody and chords up the neck:

Cya!

Get yourself one of these. I don't think even an airline baggage damager could hurt this.

Excuse me, but is "what do yall do when your banjo isn't around" a rhetorical question? tongue  I would spend time listening to some great banjo, as a previous poster stated. You should really spend as much time trying to listen and absorb great banjo sounds as trying to make them yourself.
