Yes, and she can apparently sing in that incredible voice while playing the bass (something I never figured out how to do). Move over Paul McCartney. She and her band surely produce some tasty results when they put the old tunes through their Flavorizing Machine.

I must admit I'm a bit torn.  I have never paid $15 for a digital download.  I understand that a band has got to eat, but Amazon sells the mp3 download for $8.99, which is the price I would have paid (honestly, I probably would have paid the $12.97 price for the actual CD).

Has anyone else received this email?  How will you pay (I do plan to pay, I just don't know if $15 is fair)?

Interesting. Well, no moral dilemma for me, since I bought the Reed Island Rounder CD years ago (and I downloaded it for a lot less than $15). 

On the other hand, asking for payment after the fact assumes that you would have paid $15 for it -- which is probably not the case for anyone who downloaded it.  As Jeff mentioned, why pay more a lower quality download?

Perhaps a better solution to the moral dilemma is to just delete it and try to forget that you heard it.

By the way, you can't assume that every free album download on CD Baby is an error. There are literally thousands of free albums to download. Try this Google search phrase:

site:cdbaby.com "Download Album (MP3) - $0.00"

Many musicians realize that that can't sell very many, so they are happy to give them away in order to get their music heard.

I called CDbaby the same day these posts went up and reported the issue to someone who sounded very interested and pledged to look into it. When the free downloads were still there a day or two later, I assumed it was all legit. The odd thing was, the person I spoke to spoke to the person "in charge of the website" and NEITHER of them seemed aware that there were ANY free download albums on the site. But as google shows us, there are many.

Very odd.

To answer the thread about our Reed Island Rounder CDBaby pricing - here goes:

First off - we have been reeling a bit from the number of downloads we will NOT be compensated for, during the time that the $0 charge was up. We are happy to spread our music around, but this is a bit of a knock in the head.



I just went to Amazon, and yes, they offer the whole CD for less, but they have some deal with CDBaby that does not route through us. If they have been getting it for free, as well, when folks order it, then they have been getting all the money, not us.



Our CDs are full - 22 tracks on each - and we spent the real money on a real studio and real mixing, as well as full liner notes and cover art. We do not tour much, as such, being farmers and otherwise self-employed, so we hope for CD sales to help offset our music expenses. We appreciate CDBaby, whose purpose is to help connect independent artists with marketing. And they get their cut for their work.



CDBaby lets the artist set the pricing, though they tend to set the default price for the physical CD, and then we get a percentage. That was before they offered digital, thus the different pricing on our listing.

When we fixed the snafu, we just entered the $.99/track and $15.00/CD that we have on our other listing for digital dls.

I didn't notice the physical CD price till just a bit ago when I was checking it out from a buyer's standpoint. So, I agree that it does seem odd to ask more for mp3 than wav (I don't download music - still old school around our house, and I would rather pay the artist directly when I can). However, I just tried to update the pricing on our account, and it wouldn't take (have to wait 24 hrs.).

So, for those on this discussion who did get an email from me, please write back personally, and we can work it out for the $12.97 pricing. And I would be happy to send you a pdf of the liner notes (which includes tunings).

Well, the good news is that the Reed Island Rounders have exposed their music to lots of people who would not have heard it otherwise. I can't really think of any bad news. It's not like they lost any sales because of this pricing error. 

I'm a fairly successful tech book author, and PDF versions of my books are all over the Web. Several years ago I realized a simple fact: The vast majority of people who steal my books would never have bought them if they didn't find the pirated download. So I'm out nothing -- except I get some free advertising.

Ha!  Where the heck is College Station, PA?  Penn State is in it's own zip code area of University Park, which is within/adjacent to State College.  But I've never heard of a College Station in Pennsylvania, just the one in Texas.  Oh, well, I'll take the free album just the same.

Thanks J-Walk for the original Chance McCoy link (he is very definitely, deliberately promoting his free download in order to build his contact list and promote his music). I have downloaded Chance's CD and it sounds great so far. You can also opt to contribute a tip of any amount during the process, I have done this quickly and easily via Paypal. I've also promoted the link via Facebook.
