I been using them for a few weeks now. I had picker friends turn their backs, none could tell the difference between them and National 8's (note my 8's are worn badly) or a set of flat top 3's. However a difference was detected when I slipped in a couple different brands. Point being if you like the tone of your Nationals, you WILL like these. The feel was VERY natural right away. I believe Mr. Yates has done what every pick maker has tried to do when duplicating the old Nationals. Even National!! For me these are the best picks made since the Nationals from the 40's and 50's.

I do have them. I don't have them on the website yet but I will soon. People have been emailing me and I have been working from there. Yes they are $50 for a set but they come with a container to carry them in that will hold your thumb pick as well. I also pay the shipping. There is quite a bit of expense and work in them. I wish they were faster to make and cheaper too. For now, email me if I can help.

 I dont think thats all that bad for what you get. If you pick a lot, spread that out over a year or two, price per hour is very reasonable. I know you can get picks for pennies, but they are not like these. I'll bet that if you dont like them you could sell them on the HO and not be out much money. But you wont sell them.

$50.....ouch.  I had a tough time prying my wallet open for the set of Shelors I got a couple of years ago.  So, if you buy a set of these Yates 8's, and a JD Blue Chip thumb pick, you'll have $100 worth of plastic and metal on your finger/thumb tips.  Who would have ever thought......  Of course, nobody is holding a gun to anyones head, and making them buy expensive accessories for their banjos, and we all have to assign our own value to goods and services to determine if we think it's worth it or not.  I was fired up about these initially, but now I'm going to have to really think about it.

I have always thought it was odd to see a person spend $30,000 for a car that they sit in for a few minutes a day but then buy a $15 pair of shoes that they ware all day.

Oh yea, the material is nickel silver. It is same alloy they used on the old ones. Nickel silver was a nick name for it because of the look of the metal. They did not contain silver yet it looked like it was all silver.

I just wanted opinions from pickers that have used them as I was considering buying a pair based on users opinions. What’s the significance of the number 8? Idea: Why not make use of the engraving for a practical purpose, and sell the set with a Yates “I" and a Yates “M”. I’ve never heard of a manufacturer doing that, and it would sure be nicer than magic marker or nail polish or whatever else people do (I use an engraver).

DeanT I'm not sure what you are asking. The Yates 8 is a one hit stamp into the metal of the pick. Where the number comes from is the nick name “Oval Eights” and “Round Eights”. In the patent number, the font use on the early picks had the 8 as one oval over another. The later years they used round circles to make the 8. With every product, they must be given a name so I call them “Yates Oval Eights”.

Thanks Warren. I know all about the eights on the old National picks, and was wondering if that was a connection to your use of the number. I also thought they looked too clean for a stamp, and would have guessed some kind of lazar engraving.

The I and M is just something I think about sometimes. My picks fit differently, and I tweak the differently, however, without some sort of identification, I can’t visually tell them apart. I’ve used magic marker, nail polish, and as of late, an engraver to identify the I from the M. It would be sweet to have them already marked in a permanant and professional way.

I agree. Mine are the same so it doesn't matter which one goes on each finger but they are often different with others. I will keep it in mind. I am also testing flared bands like the Dunlops for those that need them. I also might look as shorter bands for people with small fingers so they don't overlap. It all depends on the demand.

hey guys,i just wanted to say this is only my honest opinion, so here it goes....first off let me say this,for years i have been looking for a pick to come as close to the old pre USA nationals as i could get. i still have lots of sets of them left and the post USA also, i have a 2 year old son and i made a vow that i would try to save as many of them as possible for him so that he would no how good a pick is to feel on his fingers...having said that, i recieved my yates picks friday, so i put them through a little test of my own to see if IMHO they were what i was hoping for. guys i had a set of pre USA, post USA and a set of np2 ss, IMHO they are as close to the pre USA as anything on the market right now,they are amazing. warren you have did amazing job with these picks,and ill be ordering another set soon.....for anybody that wants to try them out ill be at LIL JOHNS MOUNTAIN MUSIC in burlington nc  friday an sat memorial day weekend and ill have my set of yates picks and pre an post USA nationals for u to try, im not at all crazy about people bending my picks but itll be worth it just for you to see how they compare....shoot me a pm and ill send you my contact info...thanks again warren the picks are amazing....BA

I bought a set of Warrens picks a week ago and couldnt be happier with them. They have the best tone of any of my picks. I would never have thought I could get that much of a difference in tone with finger picks but I do now

I received my picks in the mail today from Mr. Yates. I'm a happy customer.  I've been picking for the past 2 hours or so and am happy all the way around.  Comfortable, nice shape, and good quality.  I've been using Oval 8's for a while, as well as Flat "7" Nationals and honestly was a little hesitant to drop $50 on a new set of picks, but am happy that I did.  Nice case with the picks as well!  Thanks Mr. Yates!

I received mine the other day ( Thanks Warren).  I have been using old National Oval 8s and really love the tone I get from them. After my own little tests... I have decided that the Yates 8 picks are just as good, if not a little better than the Nationals. I seem to get a little more sparkle on the end of the note with the Yates picks. They are very comfortable and have that classic old National look.

Got my set last Thursday.

I'll be honest, I ordered some figuring why not try something new out? The last time I owned and used some oval 8's were when I was about 8 or 9, and my dad had filed them down to fit my fingers (still have them), so I can't compare to the originals. But I've been very happy with the picks I've been using for 6 or 7 yrs (some odd ball Nationals I found and re shaped).

I put the Yates Eights on as soon as I got home, didn't even bend the tips, and picked my 5. Well after about the first bar it was decided they are my new pics. Great feel and tone, thanks Warren.

I got a set of the Yates picks a few weeks ago and I was not surprised to hear that they were just what he's claiming them to be - an exact copy of the oval 8s. I've been using them since and haven't thought about switching back. The only difference to me is that they bend a little easier than my old Nationals, but to me that was only a good thing as it was easier to get them to fit well AND I know that metal probably changes a little over time (maybe the Nationals get stiffer after 60 years)
Why someone above experienced a little more sparkle - maybe that could have to do with shape or how new they are (not as round edges as a used pick)? It would really take a brand new set of oval 8 Nationals to REALLY compare them with the Yates picks, but how many have an unused pair or old Nationals. Not me anyway :) to me they sound the same and I am so happy someone finally did it right! Jens
