You posted a link to this thread in the "African banjo roots" Group. What about this album is related to African banjo roots?

Marc,

There are three tracks recorded on the John Bowlin 1865 fretless and also a track on the cigarbox fretless--which are early fretless banjos that sound more like the early African/American styles--also--Needed Time is a old blues hymn from that tradition.  I think folks interested in earlier styles will find much of interest on this cd.

Of course, the new tab book has the banjo tabs to all the tunes on Drumming On the Edge Of Banjo as well as the tunes on the new cd and the tunes were chosen with how well they complemented African/Caribbean drumming. :)

Marc,

I'm truly not trying to offend you or suggest that this is an African banjo cd--it is a well recorded cd with some good tunes on many different banjo voices that may be of interest to folks who enjoy hearing some of these early banjo voices in the mix :)

Best wishes,

Mary Z. Cox

ps. The free MP3 is an early blues tune :)

Marc Nerenberg - Posted - 07/04/2011:  08:49:01

I wasn't offended. I was just curious since there was no apparent link to African banjo roots. I thought maybe there was an African tune in there that wasn't obvious from its title.

That seems not to be the case and you are drawing a connection between fretless banjo playing, and old blues/gospel playing with African roots.

I personally think it's somewhat of a stretch to connect those musical ideas to the intent of the African banjo roots page - but it's not offensive at all. And Needed Time is one of my all time favourite tunes, that I've been playing for more than 30 years - and it is was, in fact, very well received when I played it during my travels in West Africa in 1981, and when I have played it in East Africa (where I've spent a lot of time working) over the past decade.

Hello Marc,

When someone is trying to historically document tunes or banjos to a specific genre--then it is good to narrowly define the genre to what may be of interest to a very small group. smiley Of course, I'm not trying to be a banjo historian (hey I'm a banjo rescuer and picker evil) but instead I am trying to market my cd and tab book to a wider audience and I believe that since many of the very small genres really don't have access to a huge amount of recordings for their listening pleasure--it is nice to let them know that there may be music of a similiar interest on the new cd. cool

We have worked very hard here all year to record and produce a cd and tab book with very listenable tunes on a variety of banjo voices and I hope there will be many folks that will order them and enjoy them and not just pass because it does not fit solidly in a narrowly defined genre. smiley

Best wishes always,

Mary Z. Cox

I agree totally. Frankly, I think narrow genre definitions just give people tunnel vision. I always prefer recordings that have variety in them. And I sincerely hope people will open their ears to all sorts of banjo sounds.

I think you seem to have taken my original query as criticism. It was not. It was curiosity.

 Marc,

Didn't think you were criticizing at allcool.  I was just trying to answer your question as to why I thought folks on that list may be interested in my new recording.

I like that the professionals expose their music to many genres of other music and sites.  Otherwise, I may not learn the many styles of playing, origins, and possibilities.  The sharing and exposure of banjoists is a wonderful thing.

I bought the new CD, can't wait to get it!   Mary, like others on this site, along with her husband Bob, were a thrill to spend a week with at JCCFS several years back.

Thank you, Mary and Bob....Brad

Thanks Brad for your friendship and support--we are looking forward to seeing you in Wichita on October 14th. I'll be giving a fun and informative claw hammer banjo workshop too--so if you are in Kansas--please let Brad know if you may be interested--we are going to have a really good time with banjos cool

Pam--thank you so much for your kind words about my new cd and book.  :)  The first books and cds that I sent out a few days ago must have arrived, because I just got my first email about the cd.

Hello MaryZ,

Thank you for sending Girl With The Banjo Tattoo so quickly.  It arrived

yesterday and today I got to sit down and enjoy an uninterupted and

undisturbed listen.

What a wonderful CD!  It is just beautiful.  Your gentle strenth permeates

every note, every note is tasteful and your love for this music comes

through on every song.  It is really a gem.

I know it will be one of my favorite albums to listen to over time, over

and over.

Regards,

Madeline

Thanks again for your kind words, Pam--we have been working day and night on this for about a year and it really makes it worthwhile to hear when folks like you are enjoying it. :)

Best wishes,

So Mary - are we going to sport tattoos of banjos when we get together in October in ABQ?  That would be a hoot - but we'd have to be able to wash them off!

Ben was serious that we should both get REAL ones - but I am not doing that as much as I love the banjo.  The pictures on the wall and the banjos in the "banjo room" are what I want and need.

Anyone know anything about temporary tatoos?  Banjo tatoos specifically?  Pass on your knowledge to Mary and me - we might just do something insane!

October 1 - ABQ concert with Mary Z. Cox.  ALso - Banjo Workshop September 30th (date not definite) - we'll post more information eventually, but if you want some answers, ask us some questions.

Judy--Ben (as darling as he is) is not going to talk me into a "real" tat either. If there is an airbrush tattoo  place in Albuquerque--we can get a color airbrush tatto--but they usually do it on templates--it is inexpensive and lasts about a week.  I don't know about custom banjo tattoos--might be more than we would care to pay for just a couple days tattoo pleasure. :)

There may be some face and body painters at the Balloon festival that would paint a temp on us. :)

Of course--we could just draw them on each other with ball point pens like the kids do to each other in school--they probably would last a couple weeks and do it yourself is free.  I'm not the best drawer in the world--but I'd be happy to give it a try. :)

Best wishes,

Mary Z. Cox

I bought this album on ITunes last night.

It's really, really fine! I love the diversity of sounds and I would characterize some of the interpretations as genuinely profound.

Are there liner notes that I can find anywhere on the Internet (since they don't come with the digital copy)?

-- also: Having bought it from ITunes (for instant gratification and no shipping and customs broker charges in this foreign country) do I still get the free MP3?

I've developed so many chemical sensitivities that I avoid anything that has chemicals such as parabens and scents.  Therefore, I shall pass on anything that I don't need to be drawn on my body.

I have to give all my Nivea away - react to that as well - gee I wonder who will take those jars home to Florida.  Just cannot use it here - will tell you more about my situation, but I avoid chemicals like the plague - actually, for me, they are the plague.

Still time to order Girl With the Banjo Tattoo cd or tab book and get a free bonus MP3 for August. (Mole in the Ground on a John Bowlin 1865 fretless). This is a new recording that is not available on any of my cds. :) It is only available in August. :)

Love your cds and your tab books, Mary.

Disappointed that your trip was canceled, but now we can look forward to the time when you CAN actually make it to our place.

For those of you who have not yet heard Mary's tunes, buy the latest cd with tab book.  The arrangements are easy to understand and play - even for those just beginning, and for those who have more skills, easy to embellish what is already there.
