Does anybody play this tune? It's one of those new old time tunes written by  Steve Mason, of the Alferd Packer String Band:

Steve looks amazingly like another Steve I know.

I discovered this tune a few years ago, but playing it was well beyond my skill level back then, so I forgot about it (except for the excellent title). It's on a CD that seems to be out of print. If it's still available, it's difficult to figure out how to buy it.

In any case, I ran across it again today, and (with a few more years of playing experience) I'm  impressed. It's really a great tune -- perhaps better than most "real" old time tunes. You'll find two jam recordings of it here:

I think I'll write it up as a Tune Of The Week backup, in case one of the scheduled contributors flakes out. But there's really not much to say about it, except that it's an exceptionally cool tune that's fun to play. I don't think anyone else has recorded it. So if you play it, please post an MP3 so I'll have something to link to if this backup TOTW ever happens.

Yeah! That's a mighty fine tune. I found it on there three times. The last one had a more crusty aka title attached to it. The first one was my favorite of the three, as the fiddles were singing proudly.

I listened to the first appearance on that page, and really had a hard time differntiating between "Sam and Ella" and "Sally Slapped..." they are almost the same.

Guess it's another example of "only one OT tune, but 4 different names."

Well, they are both in D, both have 8 measures per part, and they use the same three chords. But those criteria hold for hundreds of tunes.

But if you play them, they are VERY different. Both are great tunes, but I think Flounder is far superior in the fun-ness of playing factor. Especially that ascending scale in the A part. It took me a while to figure it out. It's way simple, and I was expecting something more complicated. 

Maybe we'll give it a shot on Friday at the TOTMC jam.

Someone in ABQ plays this tune frequently at jams.  After reading more on this thread, I discovered the mp3 from Carp Camp (Winfield) - and this fellow goes there every year.

It is a great tune - thanks for bringing it to the Hangout - think I'll play it this evening.

Great name for a band, Alferd Packer was accused of cannibalism in 1874 when a mining party he was with got stuck in a Colorado Rockies blizzard.  Parker escaped before he could be brought to trial, but was recaptured in 1883 in Wyoming and sentenced to death for manslaughter, but the sentence was overturned due to ex post facto law.  As a University of Colorado alum, I always laughed at the name of the University cafeteria which was named the "Alferd Packer Grill".  Coincidently, after his recapture Packer served a jail sentence, was paroled and later served as a guard for the Denver Post...it was rumored that he was a vegetarian for the last years of his life.  During his trial it was claimed by the prosecution that "...there were 7 Democrats in Pitkin county and you (Packer) ate 6 of them"...
