A couple of ideas - maybe silly, maybe not -- they work for me:
A very simple method for extending the life of wound strings --
particularily strings wound over a synthetic core:

A very simple "pitch reference" that can be attached inconspicuously
to a banjo. Note: the 2nd idea in this article is the one I now use
& would recommend:
