My great-great-grandfather came from Kentucky, he apparently didn't get along with his step-mother so he ran away from home at 14 to Arkansas. I never heard about any fiddlers or banjo players in the family, though my grandfather always commented on how much he liked the banjo.
My French is fine but I can't do much more than grunt for coffee in German. My Greek is alright though.
Lonesome John is one of my favorite tunes, glad you like that video.

Yeah I guess it would be kinda cool to travel by steam-liner ( as long as I had my banjo ) but I guess I will take an Airbus A-340-300 or Boeing 747-400 anyday over a steamliner. I have one old-time fiddler in my family that I know of in Kentucky, my great great grandaddy Walter "Birdie" Huff who was from Aetnaville Kentucky. Beyond that my popaw played guitar, and I had a great uncle that played the dobro and guitar and mandolin a little....banjo...in western Kentucky you dont hear as much banjo as you do over in the eastern mountains, some but not as much, but fiddle playing....oh my goodness there are TONS of fiddle players in western Kentucky where my family is from. I dont even think I could grunt in German...much less Greek LOL French a few things I can understand because I am fluent in spanish...italian...I can hang with Italian enough to get the "jist"
Yeah I liked the Lonesome John, Raleigh & Spencer and also your version of Soldiers Joy was really cool...its good to see how you really get into this music and are kinda doing your own thing with the technique. How can one get their hands on your DVD video and material? I guess through your website right?

I really like those right - hand angle close ..one could really dig in ot the way you play and interpret the banjo in this video. How many Harmony banjos do you have Hunter? I have seen at least 3 different ones.

Eric, I had 3 of them at one point. Until I hear otherwise I'm considering that to have been the world's largest collection of Harmonys! I'm down to 2 now as I swapped the one I used on the DVD for a harp guitar.

very nice harp guitar...those were used quite a bit in Germany back in the day....looks like it could be one of German origin...so I assume you play fingerstyle guitar as well?
Hunter Robertson - Posted - 09/20/2011: 10:25:11
Yeah, though I haven't played much the last few years.
I think the guitar is Swedish. They were apparently popular there too and that's where I got it from. No markings in it to tell - they might have been importing them from Germany.

Wow. You don't see a lot of fretless tubaphones.
How aboutposting a sound file? I'm curious to hear it. I'm thinking about making a temporary fretless "Fairbanks Electric" style - I have a brand new Rickard pot and am thinking about putting a fretless neck on it until my Roy Smith neck is ready (about a year). If I like the fretless sound I plan to order up another pot from Rickard and permanently affix a fretless neck to it.

That's a pretty banjo Neill. I'd like to hear it too.

I will have a practice on it tomorrow and upload some sound files then. It will take a bit of getting used to as you`ve got to hit the notes smack on the button to be in tune. The jump from the 1st fret to the fourth is the most awkward to get spot on but i expect with some practise my hands will get used to it.

Here's a couple of vids I uploaded today. They are a bit rough, this fretless lark may take a while........

Sounds great Neill, nice clear tone. The pearl was a good idea.
Good to hear your Lonesome John coming along too!
