Here is a clip of my Huber Vintage. It has the new HR 30 tone ring, and a prototype hide glue rim. The head is set just between a G and G#, I am also using light strings. From 5th to 1st, 10. 20. 12. 11. 10. See what you guys think,
Russ

Your playing ... and the banjo ... both sound mighty fine!
I played a few of the new Hubers at SPBGMA. I think Steve and the gang are making some really great instruments for sure.

Very well done Russ loved the playing, and the banjo sounds super!
I was wondering if thats by ear or by tab? Either way it sounds great.
Im a big fan of any gospel grass!
Russell Carson - Posted - 02/16/2011: 15:25:09
Hey davepicks5, the rim is from Huber. It's one that Bryan Sims built for Steve.
jeffro, this was by ear. I listened to Tom Adams cut of this tune from his Right Hand Man cd. So it's a little bit of Tom & a little bit of me.

Did your Dad stick a banjo in your hand right after you were born? LOL. I'm convinced that starting young is the way to become great. Russ, you are great. Thanks for the music treat.

Nice job for sure. Great touch and tone. I spent time at Banjo Camp North where Jimmy Mills had his signature Huber. He got unbelievable tone and volme from his!'
Keep pickin & share it with us!

Nailing the Scruggs and Jimmy Mills tone, Russell. Fantastic. And it is good to hear a Huber HR-30 picked by a great picker!

Lumpy asked, "Did your Dad stick a banjo in your hand right after you were born? LOL"
Make me chuckle, and as that dad, I guess I'll answer since Russ probably won't. I've been building banjos since age 19, so Russ grew up in a home full of them and music. He started at age 9 after hearing Earl Scruggs on a tv show I recorded. Like half the guys here, that made him want to play. I tried to talk him into the guitar but he wanted the banjo so I added the resonator back on my Vega Tubaphone and he used that for a couple years. Made a real nice bluegrass banjo to start with. We had fun running clawhammer/bluegrass banjo wars/discussions for years but now he plays all of it much better than dad. The grand daughters, now they're a different story. Stuck a banjo uke in their tiny hands right off.... Glenn Carson
