I really hadn't intended to record Shady Grove! Rather I had worked on an Irish jig called Reverend Brother's Jig. But it never sounded quite right, and somehow Shady Grove jumped out in 6/8 time instead - except for a quick run-through I didn't even practice it.
I'm posting another clawhammer jig because last week I had posted a jig (Fair Jenny's Favorite) almost as a lark - but there seemed to be some real interest in it. The technique I use is a home-brew clawhammer variation that doesn't use hammer-ons and pull-offs to get the rhythm. Personally I think this jig style is accessible for someone who already knows some clawhammer, and some people might like to know how it works. So I also recorded a basic tutorial on the style for the right hand.
If there IS interest, let me know how I might expand or clarify the tutorial, or if there are other jigs you like to hear on the banjo in this style - I'd be happy to give it a try.
Hopefully the video quality is a *little* better this time around...

This is a great technique, and I like the arrangement of Shady Grove.

I like your jig time style.
Snow! I'm not going anywhere today, so maybe I'll fool around and see what tunes I can get to work in this style.
Thanks for posting the videos.

I think it sounds wonderful -- a refreshing change from the ordinary. Thank you.

jduke - yeah please let me know if it works for you, or if there's anything I can make more clear.
I don't show the left hand because it doesn't really do anything different than in regular clawhammer - the occasional HO/PO (more POs than HOs for some reason) or slide, and it's not hard to make one of the down or up picks into a strum. But I might do another video that works through a simple tune showing both right and left.
Good luck!

slc,
Despite a record snow for this area, I didn’t get as much banjo time as I thought I might. I did fool around with a couple of songs using this style. Two things, I’m an index finger frailer, so using the index finger both down and up just seemed to leave something to be desired. And probably my biggest obstacle is, I just can’t seem to turn the “dit-ty” around. It’s like when I fool around with two finger thumb lead. The 5th string it the “dit” and the 1st string is the “ty”
I can understand that, but my fingers can’t! I like both styles, I just need to devote some time to them.
