Here's a quick note to say that there is a new how-to guide on my website for fabricating Boucher-style raw brass shoes. The photo shows a Patina finished raw brass shoe as built from the guide. It would also work quite well on a standard open back design. The blind hole is tapped to use a mounting screw, or a stud could be used alternatively with a decorative nut on the inside of the rim.

Thanks, Gents.
Hopefully someone other than myself will get some use out of it.

Thanks Dave,
Eventually these will be mated with shopmade square head brass nuts that will be tapped to fit standard J hooks. These also look good with off-the-shelf nuts if you're not going for the vintage Minstrel banjo look.

My next "serious" banjo will be a spun-over rim and I will definitely be using this type of brass shoe. How do you do the bronze finish on them?

Jonnycake,
This stuff works great. I've used it on several projects and will very quickly turn the polished brass from anything between slightly discolored all the way to almost black.
I purchased it at a woodworking store that was a Rockler dealer, It's available through Rockler's on-line sales.

Rudy,
Very nice work as always, the shoes look great and I also will be taking a look at your guide for my next banjo. If this is something that I can do myself, I won't be buying anymore shoes. Thanks
