I would have never heard of this were it not for the TV show, " How It's Made ".
I thought I was pretty good at utilizing edible meat on an animal.
This is a Scottish Dish, prepared from sheep lungs, heart, oatmeal, and other unlikely ingredients.
It's a big seller world wide, apparently. Has anyone here ever had some, or better yet, actually prepared this dish?

My & my son like it a lot, whether it's from tin or skin, steamed or microwaved. It comes sliced too. It works well wrapped in thin beef slices as Haggis beef olives. Makes an OK pizza. Scottish friends don't like to hear that it's best with English mustard.

So, you wanna make a Haggis.

Are you sure you really want one?

I had some Haggis pizza in scotland once, or was it spaghetti?
Folklore says that women prepared rations in the lining of the sheep's stomach for their men to conveniently take with them when they drove their cattle to market. You can get it in a tin now.

Yep, I've been served haggis a number of times while traveling in Scotland. As with anythign else, it's variable - I doubt that there is "one true haggis." While it is far from terrible, I'd call it an acquired taste. I think I'll stick to the distilled spirit from that same country....

Haggis, tatties 'n' neeps.

To me, it tasted like a black-peppery giblet gravy. All the "components" were chopped small so I couldn't make out any specific parts, etc.

It was "OK" but nothing that made me want to start a "Haggis King" franchise.

It can be excellent hot in a sandwich.

Haggis is delicious!

Our Scottish import shop carried a couple of brands of the canned stuff. I like it, it was available in sheep, beef or vegetairan. I see Amazon carries both brands:

No thanks. I've tried it a couple of times, and that's enough.

I hereby grant my entire lifetime share of haggis to anyone who wants it. No charge.

Enjoy.

Haggis (neeps and tatties on the side, of course) is great with a nice pint of Wee Heavy.

I've wanted to try Haggis for some time now, but want to try one that is really well made or authentic. I'm not sure where to go for that in TX or NY and heaven knows I don't want to go making it when I don't even know how it's supposed to taste. (I'm in TX until June, then NY)

If you're in NYC, try the St Andrew's (Pub) on 45th street. They might have haggis, and if they not they have Bellhaven on tap so the trip won't be wasted.

Be careful where you say that!

You can't beat a good haggis. I have it every time it's on the menu. McSweens in Edinburgh make the best.

Read some interesting history behind Haggis.
Seems like it may not have ORIGINATED in Scotland. I believe some have traced something like Haggis to ancient Greece.
Then some believe it goes back much further, perhaps from our hunter / gathering days.
You could take your stone knife, skin, gut and quarter out a fresh critter.
By being innovative, a makeshift cooking pot could be made with the skin. Then you just add water, fresh innards, season, bring to a boil, and simmer for a while.
I would guess that some family recipes were closely guarded secrets.
I found a restaurant on the internet just outside Houston, the Caledonian Kitchen, has Haggis on the menu. I might give it a try.

Much like the Blood Pudding I had in England, I enjoyed the Haggis as well.

I'm intrigued by the idea of vegetarian haggis and it's now on my list of things to try. Though it does seem like cheating to make something so, let's say unappealing, edible.

I'll be in the Albany area, but hope to visit NYC often, so I appreciate the suggestion.

I don't remember who it was, but some comedian once offered the opinion that Scottish cuisine seemed to be based on a dare.

"Ye wouldn'a eat that!"
"Aye, I would!"
"Nae, ye wouldn'a!"
back and forth until somebody grabs a fork and DOES it!

You better not beat a good haggis, Rob. You'll be in the clink if you do!

I'm looking forward to next week. Two Burns Suppers to go to play for and free haggis for the band!

We're going to the Robbie Burns supper at the brew pub. They pipe in the haggis, but we decline our portion.

Isn't vegetarian haggis a contradiction? I mean, what kind of casing do they put it in? Banana peel?

Our friend Mac has a dog named Haggis. Is this being cruel to haggis or to the dog?

The dog must have three legs, like the wild Haggis.
