I'm in the mood for Sloppy Joes. I love 'em; but won't touch the canned or any other mix. I always make mine from scratch. They vary each time depending on my taste at the time but basically, here's what I do:
Brown about a pound of ground beef, ostrich, venison or buffalo (each one brings it's own flavor) with one whole sweet onion chopped fine. Oh yah, I forgot the whole clove of chopped garlic.
Add any or all of these: (chopped) jalapeƱos, sweet green or red pepper or very hot chili peppers
once that's all brown and the veggies are soft, add to taste, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, tomato sauce and ketchup and/or your favorite BBQ sauce. Let that simmer together on low heat for about 30 minutes. You may have to add some water to keep it from getting too thick, but don't overdue it.
Put it on your favorite roll with a slice of Munster cheese and some pickles (whatever kind you like) Yum yum.
So would you bother or would you rather just use Manwhich?

Commercially canned products tend to have a LOT of sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup and to be overpriced. Just make your own.

I'd rather use Manwich. ![]()
I cook nearly everything else from scratch. But I do like Manwich (Bold) sloppy joe's.

sautee onions and garlic, then dump in a can of manwich, fast and easy, hard to beat, we have gotten to where we use ground turkey instead of hamburger

I alwys liked and used Manwich. Time saving. But now, my neighbor brings me the homemade with deer, and it is delicious. I put on bread for sandwiches on the run. I really look forward to finding her bag of goodies hanging on my door. Micki

My spaghetti sauce (ground beef, canned tomatoes, tomato paste, sauteed onions, peppers, other stuff if I feel like it, spices) makes a good SJ. Slather it on whole grain bread.

Home made of course. Won't touch manwhich and the preservatives in it.

Like a lot of busy families, we usually just use Manwich because it's fast and convenient.
My mom used to make what she called "spoonburgers", her form of sloppy joes, when we were growing up. They were great, but when Manwich came along she abandoned the homemade version.

When asked what my favorite meal is...... the answer is always sloppy joes, or BBQ sandwiches as we call them . I think the only difference is BBQ sandwiches are a little sweeter and less savory. Either way , I love them all , just please leave out the green pepper.
My wife and I could never get them to taste like my mothers, until one day I ate one and it had " It ". That's it , the flavor that's been missing, what did you do different? My wife answers.... I forgot about them on the stove, and they burned. I could see that she scraped the hell out of the blackened bottom of the pan and then put them in another pan to try and hide it. I called my mom (who never hid anything from me) and tells me now after 30 yrs that yep, ya gotta let em simmer and burn a little to the bottom to get that deep rich taste.
Now ya tell me!!!!!! Now when I come home and smell something a little burnt, I get all excited !!!
Moms recipe.....
1 1/2 lbs ground meat (beef, venison, buffalo or whatever ya like)
1-smalll onion diced fine
2-cloves garlic minced
Salt and pepper ....pinch of each.
1 big squirt heinz ketchup. about 1/2 to 3/4 cup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp dried ground mustard
1 Tbsp lemon juice (don't know why)
Brown meat and onions and drain fat.
add the rest of list and simmer.
Then add 1 &1/2 tbsp of butter and turn up the heat till they start burning on the bottom . Take off burner until burnt stuff loosens up , and then simmer till ya can't take it anymore. The longer the better.
Don't care who ya are, these ARE going to give you heart burn, so plan ahead with your favorite acid relief and enjoy moms little secret.
Guess what I'm having for dinner tonight!!!!!!

Interesting! That sounds like a recipe for baked beans, if you substituted beans and bacon for the hamburger.
We had Manwich sandwiches last Wednesday -- and Thursday for my lunch.
