Abigail has a new album coming out next week. She was at NPR and they recorded a 3-song mini concert video.

She plays a cello banjo on the third song.

It's not old time music, but she certainly has a nice voice. Except when she sings in Chinese on the second song. I had to skip past that part.

Abigail is an amazing musician and vocalist, but I agree with you about the Mandarin tunes.

By the way, you can listen to the entire album.

Well, I didn't mind the Chinese song at all, and I think the Chinese influence seeped into the last song (and maybe the first). An artist's experiences are going to find their way into the music somehow.

I think it is great stuff per usual. One of the interesting notes that has to always be considered with Abigail is how she has truly helped take clawhammer a bit more into mainstream listening. Her music seems to reflect the diversity and yet simplicity that catches the attention of more than just banjo geeks, but still keeps us excited about what she does.

That was sweet. Thanks for finding that J-Walk. I saw Abby and this band at a house concert last Oct. during what she called the City of Refuge Prelude Tour. The room wasn't much bigger than that office in the video, and the give-and-take among Abby, band members, and audience was just as you see it there. Lots of fun. A really great night, and I happily pre-ordered the CD and eagerly await its imminent arrival. Even after Abby made us sing along in Chinese (it wasn't as complicated as the song in the video)!

She was gracious about my nerdy request to autograph my banjo....

This music is full of angst. The young folks have to be feeling angst the world being what it is. I don't know much about the Chinese languages. Are they easily understood there? Or is one dialect taking over for the running of commerce and government?

Interesting to note the first tune is a take off on Fred Cockerham's Roustabout. Mr Old, meet Ms New.

Played in Popeye tuning, of course... Right J-Walk?

Roustabout and Lulu Gal (as in Hop High) are the same tune.
