Hey Jim - yeah, I'm sure everyone has they're own preferred speed they like to play these tunes. In general, though there may be a couple exceptions, I tried to record the "full speed" versions a bit slower than the recorded versions I have of each tune in an effort to try to make them more accessible to everybody. I agree it'd be nice to have a tempo control button, but at the moment incorporating such a design/programming element is above my pay grade ;) Until then, if you have a player on your computer that can adjust tempo then you can download the tunes (oldtimejam.com/CDs.html) and adjust it there.
Now if I could only quit this day job, things might be different! :)

For all those who've asked and for those interested, I now have put up a .pdf file of the chords for all the tunes on the site. There's a link to it on the "tunes" page oldtimejam.com/Tunes.html - I will continue to update it as new tunes are added. And I should have a new slew of tunes along with volume 4 up in the near future.

Basically just a bump, but it does seem to me we ought to make this a "sticky", constantly at the top of the list. The FAQ idea is really not of that much use - like any other thread it suffers from a lot of thread drift - and in fact this one does too, but at least with this thread, the important knowledge is all concentrated in the first post. Those who would like to have this up where every beginner can find it join me down at the improvements and suggestions forum.
I'm going to request that it be split so that the single post with the information on the website with the backups is all that becomes sticky.
It would be nice to have other sources of free banjo learning up there too and I would welcome a discussion on the subject

As you can see, I've been primarily using this thread (and a corresponding one on the fiddle hangout) as a place to post my updates to the site - as opposed to starting a new thread each time. I'd be all for a sticky thread, but will leave that to the bho members and the powers that be :)

Finally broke down and shelled out 10 bucks for the disc 1 download so i can pick my speed to play along, don't feel the need to have more because i am mainly doing it to practice making sure i am playing in time as a general sort of thing. two or three songs would do, i just rarely get to play with anyone. and i hate metronomes and my toe tapping can change tempo. i like the fiddle/ guitar combo. i just trim off the lead in part and then use a player to alter the tempo and go into loop play.

I can tell you that nothing will be done to make it sticky unless there is more than just me to advise it. It has been at least 14 hours now and I'm the only one to post to the thread which has the SAME title as this one. It is in hte "Improvements and Suggestions" forum. Way down south close to the bottom of the page. If you care about it, you will work toward making it easy to find.
There is no separate "Improvements and Suggestions Clawhammer & Old Time"forum. There is only the one forum and most of the regulars are not interested in old time banjo, so if you want to see this happen - go forth and say so.

Hey folks - I've received many requests for tablature to the tunes on the site, and so have decided to provide it as an added bonus to folks who become lifetime members. I've just completed tabs for all the tunes in volume 1, also known as the "old time top twenty", and have decided to make this initial set available to anyone. If you're interested, just send me a message through the contact page on the site, and I'll email it to you. You'll receive all the tunes in Tabledit (as a zip file), as well as a pdf book which you can print out. Recorded versions of all the arrangements are available on the website under the "banjo+guitar" backups.

Thanks, Rob - yes, when you see numbers underneath it will always refer to an alternate string pull off or hammer on. In this case I indicated a "1" for index, but it actually should be a "3" for ring, which is what I usually use here. So thank you for the heads up! Anyhow, here's the sequence:
First note - frailing finger
Second note - This is an ASPO on a fretted string. So here the index is fretting at 2nd fret, while my ring finger executes the pull off as an ASPO. I usually pull off from around the fourth fret with my ring, but as you probably know it doesn't really matter where you pull from (as you say, it's the 2nd fret note that's being sounded when you pull off).
Third note - frailing finger
Fourth note - drop thumb
Hopefully that's clear. Let me know if it isn't. And thanks for asking!

I wouldn't worry about developing an app. $25 for the lifetime membership (which is an incredible deal for the amount of material you provide) gives you all the mp3's which will play on an iPad just fine. I just started messing around with the backing tracks in Garageband as well (iPad version), which is a lot of fun. It's so much easier to learn new songs when I have something to play along with.
