A gibson copy is not a Gibson banjo no matter who made it.

who cares.......

my ad says gibson (COPY)

5331glenn - Posted - 05/26/2010:  14:22:24

Your heading should say gibson copy.

I guess due to the fact I was ripped off as a young banjo player buying a gibson copy presented as a Gibson banjo.

nibert26 - Posted - 05/26/2010:  14:28:11

Calm down the guy is being honest. Its not like he is saying ITS A REAL GIBSON FROM NASHVILLE WITH WARRANTY AND EARL SCRUGGS PERSONALLY PLAYED THIS BANJO!!! There is probably more fake gibsons out there than real ones anyway. Banjostan is not trying to crook anybody here

5331glenn - Posted - 05/26/2010:  14:29:25

Well why dosn't he just advertise it with the heading gibson copy?

nibert26 - Posted - 05/26/2010:  14:32:20

Its just a way for people to look at the banjo. Once people see that it is of nice quality people will inquire more about it. People on the hangout are generally honest and dont try to rip other players off. Try ebay if you really wanna get scammed.

5331glenn - Posted - 05/26/2010:  14:35:09

No I don't want to get scammed.

I'm in the middle of trying to find a new banjo for myself. So if I search the Classifieds for a Gibson banjo, I want to find a Gibson banjo.

I'm sure this copy is a fine banjo, but when the heading says it's a Gibson and I find out it's not, I stop reading and have no interest in the banjo.

I don't know everyone here real well and I would wonder what else is not true about the banjo.

impickin5 - Posted - 05/26/2010:  16:28:57

Hey 5331glenn, If you think everthing should be so open and above board, why do you not have your real name on your homepage? banjostan has his real name AND location on his homepage, so why not you? AND, he did state it was a Gibson copy in his detailed description in the classified ad. Just curious.

i put it in the gibson banjo heading to get people to look at it ...it is a gibson copy and i told who made the banjo ..ihav e bought and sold banjos on here before and never had anybody complain like you 5331 glenn i remember sometime back you were talking trash about first quality music some time back..... you must not have anything better to do than sit at the computer and trash somebody's ad if you dont like it dont buy it which i know you would not anyway... and geymbal 31 everything in the ad is true.. and by the way every banjo i have sold i have had no complaint's this is the last i am going to say about this matter. and i will put this banjo up against any new gibson as far as workmanship and quality and setup is a whole lot better.and for the money it is well worth it

Forrest - Posted - 05/26/2010:  17:40:58

I could see it if Stan hadn't been so up front and clear about this banjo in his ad text, but in my opinion, he was very clear. Can you honestly see someone buying this banjo without actually reading the ad? Seriously?

If you didn't like the title then email Stan privately. I know him to be a reasonable person and someone that would take well meaning criticism to heart and he would have likely changed the title. To bring it up here without contacting him privately is (IMO) a bit over the top. No offense Glenn since I know you mean well. I also know Stan and I know he would never mislead anyone. Not putting "copy" in the title is perhaps a grey area but if you read the first sentence of the ad, then you'd understand what he was selling. Anyone buying a banjo of this calibre and price would most certainly read the entire ad several times and would know exactly what they were getting.

5331glenn - Posted - 05/26/2010:  17:52:00

Well Stan I was only saying the ad title was misleading. I have never ever said anything negative about 1st Quality. You must have me confused with someone else. Still don't agree with the approach, and I guess your "Who cares" comment fired me up. I probably would not have had anything else to say if not for that.

Stevespickn - Posted - 05/26/2010:  17:59:16

Stan..hope your Gibson copy sells..no problem in the ad from me.

thank you everybody for your response and private e-mail's and support and i stan behind what i have said. and thanks again. i have no worries the banjo will sell.

obxpix - Posted - 05/26/2010:  18:14:52

Sorry, but I have to agree with Glenn....I know Stan isn't trying to rip anyone, but I don't agree with putting headings like that when they aren't Gibson banjos....If anything, I find it almost as aggravating as those that say a certain item, and when you click on them they say they want to buy that item....
If you had someone make a parts banjo and had them make a neck that said Stelling on it, would you advertise is as "Stelling Banjo for sale"....I don't think so....
Just be up front (even on the heading) and say Gibson Parts Banjo...just my .02 cents!!

Forrest - Posted - 05/26/2010:  18:52:44

Getting back on topic... I played this banjo and heard Stan play it quite a bit a few weeks ago and it is a killer. It has everything you could hope to find in Crowe style banjo and more. It has that dry pop, excellent note separation and is quite loud. Classic mahogany sound. The construction is also first rate.

Michael Keith - Posted - 05/26/2010:  19:49:42

banjostan that is a nice looking banjo. Arthur never builds a bad one. He takes his time until it is just right. He is building me a new neck for my Real 1926 Gibson. Just in case any one asks. But copy it may be and a fine one at that.

buffalograss - Posted - 05/26/2010:  20:33:40

.....ummmm.....then mindful that [quote] "this banjo rings like a bell and arthurs workmanship takes a back seat to nobody" as you say banjostan - and I believe banjostan that what you say is true from all of the Hatfield info that I have read on the Hangout - then I'm just sayin' that it should be called a
....."Hatfield" banjo..........yes?

(....but it is a Gibson counterfeit - copy - fake - same thing...... when the Gibson logo is pasted on it - especially without the artist's signature appearing somewhere on the unit .....whatever huh? It it what it is.)

[Prada, Gucci, Coach, Louis Vuitton, Chanel - is the banjo business any different than the fashion business? Not tryin' to skewer anybody - as I say....it is what it is. I'm sure there are regrets.)

HarleyQ - Posted - 05/26/2010:  21:45:49

My goodness people!! ease up a little. If Stan was the only person on here that has G***** on his peghead, you might have a gripe. I'd say most of us can pull a couple out from under our beds.
I'm beginning to see why alot of the ole timers are leaving.
Hoyt

Edit to say: If Arthur built it, more than likely it's better than a Gibson

I couldn't agree more Hoyt. This kind of unsolicited crap has run off many old timers and pros alike. Many of you may not realize Stan's history with the banjo, or his playing level, but he has been playing professionally since I was in elementary school and I turned 41 this year.

I'm sure that when Stan posted this banjo for sale (with full disclosure I might add..) he didn't expect to be harassed or receive "expert" input from a bunch of novice armchair lawyers. I don't recall him asking for any opinions on this banjo, only that he wishes to sell it for a fair price. He should have called it a Gibson conversion banjo since it has the same tone ring, rim, flange, hoop, arm rest, head and resonator as a Gibson banjo. If you argumentative types want to go down that slippery slope, I suggest you start your own thread.

I've played this banjo. It's as good or better than any of the 18 Gibson banjos I've owned.

I stand by my opinion of misleading headings.

Your point was taken and the heading changed, Glenn. I wasn't talking about you. You made your point a while ago.

The best way to get over being bitter is to quit being bitter. I haven’t been posting very long on the forum, but I have played a lot of different banjos. My father has a gibson copy. He didn't know that it wasn't a gibson when he bought, it sounds great and looks great. In fact when I told him, his response was "Well, it sounds great to me, and it's fun to play."

Stan’s add is perfectly honest, if someone chooses to stop reading after they find that it is a copy, that is their decision. From what I have heard and read Hatfield makes awesome banjos. 5331glenn, no more bitterness. If want to be bitter, you don’t have to share it. Just be happy.

Well stated, Nyk. In the big scheme of things, making mountains out of molehills just doesn't make sense and wastes a lot of time and emotional energy. I hope banjostan sells that puppy at full price and fast! Looks like it's better than a Gibson.

5331glenn - Posted - 05/27/2010:  11:28:37

I'm not bitter, I was just asking for ..... whats the use. I wasn't challenging anyones integrity, I just don't like gimmicks. I know now that my opinion though well intended offends some. "Peace On Earth Good Will Toward Men."

Hey buddy....Don't let em get to ya! The banjo is a very high quality, solidly built, and great sounding banjo. (if it's the one I heard at SPBGMA!) Very reasonably priced for Arthur's work! Just keep track of the jabs, who threw 'em, and wait. They'll step in their own s*** soon enough, and then it's PAYBACK TIME!!!!!!!

Buffalograss; probably 3/4 of the people on here make the fatal mistake of forgetting the "i" before "e", except after "c" grammar rule!!!!
I see no reason for you people to continue badgering someone. Furthermore, I must have missed the memo putting YOU in charge of spelling and punctuation here on the ever friendly BHO!!! Your post, if reported to a moderator could very well be interpreted as a personal attack!

Banjostan~~if it's any consolation, everytime someone posts, pos or neg, your ad gets "bumped" to the top of the Swap Shop forum, so, yeah, that's good. Just to put my $.02 in, you ad looks fine to me-no harm-no foul. Good luck with selling what I'm sure is a fine sounding and handsome instrument.
