Today's WNRV Mountain Music show will feature a variety of old-time music rather than focusing on an area. Chris' regional shows will continue next week with a look at traditional old-time from around Galax.

I've started posting the show playlist at wnrvbluegrassradio.com in the music forum, & will be making the shows available for download in the next few weeks. Hope you tune in & like what you hear - let me know what you think of the shows (& the station in general).

Troy - let me know if you're still having problems with the stream.

Todays show will air at 2 pm and will be featuring Old Time Music of the Galax region. The repeat show will air Thursday evening at 6pm.

Great news about the archives! I'm usually busy when the show airs, so thanks very much for making this available. Lovin' it!

bluemule_77 - Posted - 05/03/2010:  07:01:55

This is terrific, terrific stuff. I downloaded nearly everything out of the archives and listened to a big part of the Giles Mt. stringband live in-studio. Such fiddling!

Good work, and good playing Chris.

Looking forward to its appearance in the archives.

The 5/11 show is now available for download in our Archives.

Be sure to tune in tomorrow from 2-3 PM for a special Henry Reed show. Chris will be comparing some of Henry's recordings from Alan Jabbour in 1966-1967 to the versions done in 2009 with 4 of Henry's sons in the Reed Family Band.

terry_wnrv - Posted - 05/20/2010:  17:36:44

The 5/18 show & playlist are now posted on the station site. Please let us know if you're liking these shows, or well, even if you're not :-) We welcome any feedback & suggestions about this show or any other aspect of the station (sending email to me directly is fine if you'd prefer that to posting your comments here).

bluemule_77 - Posted - 05/20/2010:  18:40:02

Don't know why this thread isn't more heavily posted-to. I'm playing catch-up on downloading the shows (need to get these three most recent ones... they are downloading now...).

Anyhow, THANKS to everyone involved in organizing, broadcasting, and making available these shows. My only suggestion is that you don't quit!

This week we will be doing part 2 of the Henry Reed sessions in the late 60's, followed by the same cuts by the Reed Family Band. Neal,Gene,Dean and James were in on some of the old recordings, and the Reed Family project last year, brought them back 40 years later to play the same tunes again. This is a 2 week feature of that, leading up to our 8th annual Henry Reed Memorial Fiddlers Convention. Starts at 2 on AM 990

Today's Mountain Music Show will be an encore broadcast of the 3/30 show that featured the local Va-WV state line region (counties of Giles, Monroe, Mercer & Tazewell), which includes Henry Reed, Frank George, Oscar Wright, & Cecil Thompson. This is part of our tribute to Henry Reed & Frank George as we build toward the 8th Annual Henry Reed Memorial Fiddler's Convention on June 11-12. Frank George will be playing on the night of June 11, which will be broadcast live on WNRV (as will all the other bands on Friday night).

Chris Via - Posted - 06/08/2010:  10:26:55

This week we will feature Franklin George, along with some Henry Reed music. We also have some of Alan Jabbours' music mixed in to feature him too. He will give the fiddle workshops at out festival again this year. We wanted to thank Alan and Frank for contributing to the Henry Reed Fiddlers Convention.

This week's Mountain Music Show will feature a live set from the Thumbdingers at last weekend's Henry Reed Memorial Fiddler's Convention. They were last year's old-time band winners & one of the featured bands on Friday night (6/11/10).

We'll be playing the live music from the festival over the next few weeks. WNRV broadcast all the bands live on Friday night, as well as the individual & band competitions on Saturday (about 11 hours total).

terry_wnrv - Posted - 06/22/2010:  08:24:50

This week we'll play the Frank George & Friends set from the Henry Reed festival on the Mountain Music show. The rest of the show will feature the 1st & 2nd place old-time individual winners. We did not get recordings of a few of the individual winners (the rain caused technical difficulties with some of our equipment), our apologies to those we missed.

We'll be playing some of the bluegrass winners on Saturday's New River Valley Jamboree (3-4 PM). We'll continue to feature live recordings from the festival over the next few weeks on both shows.

terry_wnrv - Posted - 06/25/2010:  13:42:56

Next Tuesday we'll have the Friday night Reed Family Band set & the old-time band competition winners on the Mountain Music Show.

On tomorrow's New River Valley Jamboree show (Sat 3-4 PM) we'll play the first part of the Saturday individual competitions. We'll continue to play the competitions over the next few weeks on the Jamboree (including the bands).

Im putting together a show featuring old time fingerstyle banjo. If you play this way, and want to be a part of the show, send us some files of what you want aired, or send a cd to us, so we can put this together. We will do a show of old music, and also a show of present day fingerstyle players. Send files to Terry at WNRV.
Thanks

help! I'm desperate to hear and download some of these shows, but i can't seem to get them to load on my Mac. I click on the show, but i get nothing. I can get the playlist, but this is only a tease.

terry_wnrv - Posted - 08/20/2010:  05:58:35

The archived Mountain Music Shows are MP3 files. The file should just download & play in the browser when you click on the date. These files are fairly big (50 - 100 MB) since they are the complete shows, so it may take a minute or 2 for them to load & start playing. As a test, try right clicking on the date & saving the MP3 file to your machine, & playing the file from there.

I use a Mac most of the time & these work fine on my machines (I normally test them from Safari or Firefox on my Mac when I upload a new show).

In the 8/17/10 Mountain Music Show Chris featured more traditional old-time from the Galax, VA area. This show is now available for download in the Archives.

terry_wnrv - Posted - 08/30/2010:  17:37:52

Sorry for not posting an update last week. The 8/24 show was a rebroadcast of the 6/8/10 show that featured Frank George and Henry Reed (which was already available for download in the Archives).

This week's Mountain Music Show has a different approach than usual. We wanted to do some shows featuring old-time finger-style banjo, so we decided to send out a request for music rather than just put together a show from our own music collection. We received material from several folks in the hangout, tune in on Tuesday from 2-3 PM to see who was included this week in part 1 of this series (rebroadcast is Thursday 6-7 PM).

We're still looking for more finger-style banjo for a 2nd show in the series, so let me know if you'd like to have something considered for the next show. Thanks to everyone that submitted music for this week.

As always, let Chris & I know if you have any ideas or requests for future shows (or the station in general, we're always open to comments & suggestions.

Today's show will be a rebroadcast of the 6/15/10 Mountain Music Show that had the Thumbdingers' 1st set from the 8th Annual Henry Reed Memorial Fiddlers Convention on 6/11/15.

Last week's finger-style banjo show is now available for download.

terry_wnrv - Posted - 09/14/2010:  11:13:14

This week's show will feature 2 classic Whitetop, VA region old-time banjo pickers: Lawrence Russell & Jont Blevins. It is currently being aired (2-3 PM each Tuesday), it will also be repeated on Thursday from 6-7 PM.

The 9/14/10 Mountain Music show is now available for download.

terry_wnrv - Posted - 09/20/2010:  17:31:11

The Thumbdingers set 2 weeks ago got us in the mood for some more live music from the 8th Annual Henry Reed Memorial Fiddlers Convention. So this week we'll have an encore presentation of the Frank George & Friends live set from Friday night of the festival. The 1st & 2nd place individual old-time competition winners will be featured in the second part of the show (there were a couple of winners that we unfortunately were not able to record). The download & playlist for the show (originally aired on 6/22/10) are already available in our Archives: wnrvbluegrassradio.com/archive.html.

terry_wnrv - Posted - 09/28/2010:  07:44:53

This week our buddy Kilby Spencer helped put together a new Mountain Music Show that features some fiddlers that were prominent on radio in the 1930s-50s. As always, the show will be broadcast from 2-3 PM on Tuesday & then repeated from 6-7 PM on Thursday.

The 9/28 Mountain Music Show is now available for download.

These are great shows. So many good tunes and I like the fact that it is not sugar-coated. Thanks for such a great gift.

terry_wnrv - Posted - 10/03/2010:  18:38:37

Thanks, I'm glad you like the show. Our emphasis is on the music (which is the case with the station in general, as well as community support).

I always welcome feedback, whether positive or not :-)

terry_wnrv - Posted - 10/05/2010:  12:23:29

Old-time music from Georgia was the theme for today's Mountain Music Show. The focus was around the Skillet Lickers-based group of family & friends, but there are also some other 1920s Georgia musicians mixed in there. Thanks to Neil Turner for providing the Georgia old-time tunes.

The show just aired, you can catch the rebroadcast on Thursday from 6-7 PM. I posted the playlist in the WNRV Music forum, the show will be uploaded to the Archives sometime this weekend.

terry_wnrv - Posted - 10/12/2010:  13:22:23

This week we continued with the Georgia theme & did a second show based around 1920s-40s old-time from Georgia. As always, the Mountain Music Show playlist is in the WNRV Music Forum & you can hear a rebroadcast at 6 PM on Thursday.

Thanks to Neil Turner, Junberry78s, and Allen's archive of early and old country music for some of the tunes for the show.

The 1st Georgia show (10/5/10) is now available for download in our Archives, today's show should be uploaded early next week.

terry_wnrv - Posted - 10/19/2010:  12:46:10

Today's Mountain Music Show had a local flavor, Chris featured several musicians from Giles County & the surrounding area. The playlist is in the Music forum.

The 2nd Georgia show (10/12) has been uploaded to our Archives.

terry_wnrv - Posted - 10/26/2010:  13:40:56

We had a variety of old-time songs this week on the Mountain Music Show, rather than a specific theme. I just posted the playlist in the Music Forum. We picked some of these from Neil Turner's music stash, so thanks to Neil.
