yeah ... I know what you mean ... I love those guys.

But ... Chris has put something together that is hard to define. I'm not sure I even think of them as jazzy ... they are very new ... interesting ... fresh ... amazing ... but jazz ?

I'm not sure.

Just like the first time I heard the Grisman group back in the late 70's ... I loved the music but couldn't figure out where they belonged.

They did the beautiful "Naima" on quintet 80 ... so I started thinking they were jazz ...

No banjo, tho' ...

That Noam is a fine young player ....

I was not familiar with Punch Bros, but I am VERY impressed!

They ARE 'jazzy", but I wouldn't put them in a jazz category. I feel like any of them would be capable sharing the stage with most established jazz groups. They are all obvious very versatile musicians operating within a bluegrass format. The job they do on the Radiohead covers require sensitivity, and they have that in spades.

Chris is an amazing mandolinist. I play some mandolin as an offshoot of my tenor banjo playing, so I find his work very inspiring.

Your MySpace clips sound great - you're on your way to maybe becoming the Allan Holdsworth of the banjo (in a little while perhaps, but I can see it). Actually, all your tunes on MySpace are nice (and in several different styles too), and I can also see the development in your jazz playing from 2008 to the present (assuming that Out Of Nowhere is from 2 years ago). Keep up the great stuff1

ya its neat for me to listen from old to new - I have music from 2006 that I made when I was still pretty much a straight up scruggs style bluegrass player, its cool how much has changed in the last 4 years. both cazadero and the electric one were complete experiments that I never made masters of, and now I dont have my equipment and I cant make masters for a while, so i decided to post the rough stuff. theres alot of rough spots, especially because there first takes, but it would be a lie to have NO rough spots in my playing for sure lol
