Thanks for the kind words!

This is what he does after I say " I want something with a butterfly and maybe some vines". LOL

Yes he is a graphic artist and gets paid to do art for t-shirt design. Chances are if you have a official college football t-shirt that he had his hand in designing it. He does so much more than just that though.

He created it and sized it in the computer to fit exactly the way he wanted it to. Then he printed it out onto vellum and taped it to the underside of the head. He then used his light table to backlight the design. He did not do this free hand because he was worried about several things, getting too close to the metal, and he worried about the fiberskin head. He thought it would bleed and it did to some extent, but he was able to contain most of the bleeding of ink. He used his rapidograph pens to do this and it took about an hour to put it on the head. The pens are for very fine lines and have tiny points and you hand fill them with ink.

He does do art the old fashioned way still with pencil to paper most of the time and that's what people always love about his work. If you want to see some amazing designs he's hand drawn just check out our site at the bottom here.
I'm not on here trying to plug anything but I am just a proud wife.

We've been married almost 18 years now (end of Feb.) and I love him so much it's sick. And yes he will be rewarded for his work tinkersdam. LOL

Chip - Come on down anytime and he'd be happy to mark your stuff up!

Thanks ya'll.

Thanks from me too...

Not sure what market demand is out there,
but it looks like a nice e-business opportunity.

Just occured to me...
Anyone out there try this kind of thing with airbrush and stencils?

Hey Caddielad,

That's a good idea, we may just have to look into that. He was just having fun, but it would be cool if people wanted him to do them.

Thats nice ... if you play over the neck it should be all right .... I play over the head and so I'd have to spin that head alittle so that I wouldn't rub that wonderful design off with my crazy finger frailing :-)

harvey - Posted - 02/03/2010:  10:40:27

very nice indeed.

i'm surprised that more people don't decorate their banjo heads (apart from the very odd Seeger-style slogan). maybe it's because banjo players are so in awe of tradition and "the oldtimers" "Earl" or whoever didn't decorate theirs.

5stringpicker2 - Posted - 02/03/2010:  13:11:46

Yes, I was an Airbrush Artist for 20 years or so also a Graphic Artist. And I've Airbrushed Banjo heads and Cases many times.

Wow, thanks for showing it off!

Why don't more banjos have cool head designs? Hmmm, maybe this question needs a thread...

banjoholic - Posted - 02/03/2010:  16:31:23

Mandy, I definitely think you could make a business of it. You could offer already decorated heads, or give folks the option to send in their own banjo heads. I think you'd have a fair amount of interest. I'm not one for fancy inlay, etc., but your banjo head looks tasteful and elegant.

dgill - Posted - 02/03/2010:  17:50:44

That is over the top cool. Very nicely done. I will say he could also show you some love by laying out a nice tattoo in a secluded spot. With his talent I am sure it would be killer.

pickinchik - Posted - 02/03/2010:  19:24:53

dgill - Thanks, we are always in the process of planning out our next tattoo. My husband is in the second stage of his 4 stage full sleeve tatt right now. LOL

Again, thanks everyone for the kind words.

I spotted a decorated skin a few months ago and thought it was cool, wanted something on my banjo but thought against it. Thanks to you I have changed my mind. My daughter is a great artist and has designed a neat buttertfly incorporating my initial. Can hardly wait to get it done. Thanks for the inspiration.
