First of all, I want to say, I love reading this forum and had no idea there could be this level of detail in understanding banjoes. So this could be a bogus, or nonanswerable question, but has anybody bought a banjo that was less than what it claimed to be for either parts that were the real deal or a fake part that was so good that you liked it. I'm asking this because we were driving to northern Michigan this spring and my friend always stops at certain pawn shops or music stores (thus reducing our fishing time, but it's part of the tradition), and I found a banjo that was put together from parts. It didn't claim to be anything special, and it sounded terrible, but the neck was beautiful, and I could have used it to put together a very good banjo. Are there any rules of thumb in assessing these situations?

Pay as little as possible. ;-)

I always try to figure what the parts would cost to build a banjo and work backwards from there if the banjo has problems or use it as a starting point if it's really nice. There's no sense buying a parts banjo for more than the parts would cost. I guess you could figure labor, but nobody pays himself if he's building a personal banjo.

Keep the best, discard the rest, buy quality parts, and you know the rest!

I use counterfeit money when I buy a fake. Hey, fair is fair, right?

You can pay with fake money. You can print it out from your computer.
