I have just learned my first Bela Fleck tune (Texas Bar-B-Que), and I am ready to tackle another...what do you suggest? BTW, I learned by watching his dvd, and having the tab to help me along. Thanks!

Thanks Randy, and I love that tune as well. I tried "See Rock City", and gave up on it after about two weeks. I'll try "Whitewater" and maybe get back to SRC!

Whitewater.....There's a tabledit version in the tablature section on this site. That way you can slow it down to your pace and realize that it's actually a pretty easy tune!

The Overgrown Waltz is pretty easy. And really mellow, too! Old Jellico isn't terribly hard, either. These can both be found in the tab book for Tales From the Acoustic Planet: The Bluegrass Sessions

Slipstream was a killer for me. Big Country isn't bad.

I'm trying to learn See Rock City, and it's convinced me that Bela Fleck is some kind of sadist. ;)
The up-the-neck fingerings are so tortuous that they leave my left index finger numb from the effort of holding 2 strings down with the index and middle, while thumbing the 5th string, and hitting two separate, consecutive notes with the ring and little finger. When I hit it it sounds beautiful, but I'm probably going to have to take a break on this song and let my left index finger heal.

Natchez Trace isn't too bad. Bela plays out of G minor tuning, but other than that it is relatively simple. For G minor tuning, drop your B string a half step

The Bluegrass Music Has Got To Be Played!
RyanHerr - Posted - 07/09/2009: 09:17:47
I started out playing banjo in 2001 by learning Bela Fleck tunes from tab. Sunset Road was the first - I learned that before Cripple Creek. I also worked on tunes from the Drive album, from the Homespun Tapes 6CD set, and other stuff tabbed out in the Banjo Newsletter. So, a few years ago I would have told you that I knew a couple Bela Fleck tunes. But, I was playing them more like classical etudes than like newgrass or jazz. What I mean is that I was playing them as short banjo solos and playing them the same way every time - no variations or improvisation. And that's okay if that's what you enjoy, but after awhile I didn't enjoy that anymore. So, now I would tell you that I actually don't know any Bela Fleck tunes.
-Ryan.
