Thanks for the prayers,, My wife is back home,, i am still week, and hurting after 5 days home The Athenafied Classic,, that had been sitting in the case for almost 3 weeks was still perfecly in tune, I played a couple of tunes, and put Her back in case, with Humidifier, This banjo is sounding so good i hated to put it back in the case, Maybe next week, I think it sounds better than the bronze ring, Real sweet,, Knock,, Pop,, Zing,, everything in between, Pick close to bridge sounds like shooting bullets,, Then pick about 3 inches from bridge, and You get all the sounds.

Banjomensch, The FC is an adapter that mounts on a traditional banjo allowing it to receive a Nechville neck. nechville.com/flux.html
Tom has engineered an ingenious neck attachment that allows quick and easy neck adjustment or removal. A couple turns with a hex wrench ..off comes the neck. Pack your whole banjo in a suitcase.

But don't worry Lee, I will get another Nechville in the future, I do love them! I hope you and your wife are doing better.

I have just been wondering, How many people have ever heard,, or even seen a Nechvile?? I hadn't untill last year, I had heard of them, but had never seen one, I thought there is no way I'd want one, Untill the guy screwed it apart, and showed Me the tone ring,, and the 80 ball Bearings, Put it back together tightened it up,, reset the bridge, showed Me how to change the neck, so You can use any size bridge, and still have low action, and it was a used one 4 years old, I picked on it about 45 min. Looked it over for any faults, found none, The slim Radiused finger board, and neck Sooo eazy to get around on, I had to have it, Then because of a bad back,, In November I had the Wood Tone ring put in, Now I can stand up and pick, and the sound is hard to beleive,, I don't see how this wood Ring puts out such a metallc sound, I think it is because of those 80 ball bearings are pushing against The Cocobolo wood Ring, the steel ball bearings transfer thru the wood,, to the head,, anyway,, unless I change My mind, I think I will buy nothing but Nechville banjo's from now on.,, They are GREAT. Fantastic.

I am a fairly new player and my intention was to go out and buy a intermediate level banjo to replace the borrowed one I am learning on. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I played a Nechville earlier this year and was so impressed by the level of innovation and playability. So, I have delayed getting a new banjo until I can afford a Nechville and I am looking forward to the day I get to place my order. That may be a while given the economy right now but I am sure it will be worth the wait.

Man, I took My Classic completly apart last night,, Cleaned some oil off The inside of the head,, Completly cleaned the Cocobola ring,, Put a thin coat of Vaseline on the outer rim of the wood ring,, the part that contacts the outer edge of the head,, put the head back in ,, put in the wood ring, and the 80 steel bearings,, Then screwed it back together,, replaced the bridge, gave it a little touch up tuning, and was pickin again, and it only took 20 min. No other banjo will do this. Go forward,, Not Backwards, anyway it is a great banjo. THANKS. I forgot to say, I cleaned all the metal threads, and put some Nechville grease on the threads before I screwed it back together..

Hey Lee, It's good to hear about your experience taking it apart. If you put a small mark or piece of tape on the turning flange ring before you take it apart, you'll be sure to get it back to the starting tension (as long as you bring the mark back to where it started.) If you keep going with the tension, have you noticed it loosing anything? I find they usually just get louder and brighter, but after playing the bright/ loud for a while I usually back it off to a slightly warmer tone.

Why don't you just mark it with tape and try it out? It'd just take 15 minutes to put it back the way it is now if you don't like it.
I couldn't have anything but a ren head on my Nechville. Makes it even nicer.

I put the Renaissance head on my Phantom tonight. It really sounds great. I set it to about 90 on my DrumDial. Have you guys with the Renaissance head found that your Nechville sounds better with more, or less tension, compared to a standard Remo frosted white head? I'm sure that I will need to tighten it more over the next few days, as the head stretches and settles in.
Beardog
g-banjo - Posted - 02/11/2009: 03:22:41
I just set it where it sounds nice, then tighten it if it sounds less nice after a while. No idea about tensions really.
Tedd - Posted - 02/11/2009: 05:38:10
Beardog, I have ren head on my Phantom...like g-banjo, I don't usually pay attention to measured tension--going for a sound. Once I tap tuned it to G# where it sounded dead. I remembered Tom saying "just keep cranking", so I did. I gave the wrenches several more cranks...popped the resonator on, played a bit, cranked again, played....until I had the sound I wanted. A couple days later I gave it another half turn to pick up the stretch. I've tried other heads on this banjo, but the ren is definitely the best sound.

Beardog - Posted - 02/11/2009: 06:23:17
Yeah, I'm not too fixed on exact head tension. I just had the chance to buy a brand new DrumDial, still in the original box, locally . I just paid 30 bucks for it, so I am just using it to see what tension reading I get whenever I get the "right sound". That will just make it easier to go right back to that tension when I swap out a head or take a banjo down for other reasons.
Beardog
g-banjo - Posted - 02/11/2009: 06:55:58
Good idea, though I reckon all heads are different and even two apparently identical will have slight variations.
If you have to take the drum apart for other reasons (though I can't quite imagine what they might be) you can always just mark your tension with a couple of bits of tape and then you should be able to just put it back exactly the way it was in minutes. The same goes if you find a tension where it sounds really nice but you'd like to try to find if there's anywhere it might sound even better; just mark it up before you experiment and you'll always have that sweet spot to go back to.
alprice - Posted - 02/11/2009: 08:31:12
For me, I have to crank the Ren head a bit tighter than a white frosted head.
