i've had a nechville for 3 years now and they really are neat instruments. I've got mine set up completely black and it definitely draws the eye!
i'd say the biggest logistical perk of a nechville is the setup, i can take the whole thing apart and throw it back together and it still sounds good, no way i'd try that on a traditional pot assembly. makes for a good versatile player if you like to experiment with a lot of different tones.

Hey Al - The Atlas Standard looks like an extremely nice open-back banjo. Does it only come with a 12" pot? Are there any in the Nashville area that I could go see? (SPBGMA is a long time to wait).
Thanks for your help.

Man I just can hardly beleave how easy, and great My Athenafied Classic Deluxe plays,, and sounds, Untill You own a Nechville, You will not beleave how great a banjo it really is, And if You have a very bad back like Me You might want to go with The Cocobolo Wood Tone ring, My Athenafied Classic Deluxe is great, and only weighs 7 lbs. GREAT TONE.. WOW.

1. Helimount system - easy maintenance, even tension, light
2. Phantom neck - I've never learned to like working around the 5th string tuner
3. radius fret board - never tried one, but sure seems like a good idea
4. appearance - genuinely modern and different look than same old prewar design
Things holding me back -
1. I've never heard one in person
2. I already have a banjo that is better than I need (and another that I need to sell before I spend any more $)

Al;
Good suggestion.
Uptown Bluegrass is going to be at the Blueberry Festival, which is about as close to home as I'm likely to find a Nechville!
I hadn't planned to go to that festival but I might make more of an effort to see it now.

Scott, if you should find yourself at the same bluegrass festival this year as George McKnight, host of "Uptown Bluegrass", ask him to show you his Nechville. He'd love to have you play it.

You are right on. Goldstarman,, There are to many pickers, Who never even heard a Nechville, much less picked one, and if They could see in detail how fast and eazy To change out tone rings, and reset the neck, and do it so fast, I try to show mine every pickin session, and jam, and Festival I can get to, most people are amazed when They really get to see one took apart, and neck removed,, and or reset for all size bridges, and string action,, I think more people are starting to wake up, With completely even tension on the whole head,, and how eazy it is to get the sound You want,, They have the Knock,, Pop,, Ring,, Zing,, Growel,,, and all the other sounds You would want., I could go on about Tom's Compensated,, and Radiused bridges,, Massive, and stable tailpiece, and on and on, I could fill this page with all the great inovations, and Inventions Tom has put in these beauties, but for now I'll stop..

i have heard two played and it is my favorite tone I have heard for a banjo. I have not tried playing on though. I also love the non- traditional look. But as a relative beginner, even though i need a new banjo, probably moving to the $500-800 range, they are out of my league price wise. I wish you had a more entry level priced one, not necessarily at the Gold tone CC or the Deering Goodtime but maybe in that $600-1000 range maybe with less adjustability or something.

I have only bought one banjo and that was a GoodTimes. I build my own, for economic reasons, and because I'm cheap! If I were to buy one banjo it would be a Nechville! I'm fascinated by the technology, and would love to play around with one to see if I could get the sound I like out of it. However, I already have six, one of which I'm considering selling, but I'm afraid if I brought one more banjo into the house I would be sleeping with the dog at best (I don't have a dog)! Even though I'm not supporting you KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

I was supposed to play with my band tonight, a couple other guys saturday night, and play with my group for a well advertised sing Sunday night but I have come down with something called cellulitis.
Some kind of skin infection triggered by an insect bite. Anyway have to be on antibiotics for 10 days and HOPE it doesn't get worse or I might have to go to the ER for IV antibiotics.
The doc said IF I was better Sunday I could make the Sunday night thing as long as I sit and keep my leg up.
The minister called that is holding the sing and is really wanting me to play so the band will be complete so I will be there if I am better picking my Nechville vintage. Imagine sitting with your leg up playing on stage!
So to be honest a prayer or two would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Jim, I have had two surgerys on Neck, One on shoulder,, Three on Back. I bought My fabulous Classic Deluxe, about 15 months ago, it's a 2004. I love everything about it,, I had Tom put a Cocobolo wood tone ring in it, and with 80 steel ball bearings pushing against the wood ring produces a Metalic tone, and now it only weighs 7 lbs. I can now stand and pick,, It is great.. WOW. I'l tell You this, There is Nothing not to like about Nechville banjo's, ( The Best New Banjo's Being Built Today,, ) (AND Tomorrow)... TRY ONE.

I feel I can now comment on this thread as I recently got the opportunity to play several Nechville banjo's at a Bluegrass festival.
I found them to have THE sound, (the much sought after bluegrass banjo sound.) They were very consistant which I think is maybe where the Nechville shines through (virtually eliminating the Hit or miss thing you seem to get with other instruments i.e you play Gibson's which blow your mind and some which are decidedly poor.) I loved the radiused fingerboard it feels instinctive, very nice.
However I found all of the Nechville's I played were very quiet when compared to a Mastertone style Banjo, I was assured that the sound of the Nechville would Cut through when in a band situation, but I listened at length to a Jam session where there were two Nechville Banjo's being played; I can't say I thought they were cutting through, in fact I could barely hear either of them.
I was dissapointed by the Nechville neck (especially after loving the fingerboard so much) to me they just were not banjo necks; they felt exactly like the neck on my Fender Telecaster; which is without doubt the nicest guitar neck I've ever played but it just didn't feel right on a banjo.
In conclusion I would say that a Nechville is a great place to go; if you just want to play to yourself or if you need a banjo that won't make the neighbours complain. The tone is great and the fingerboard is absolutely heavenly, but the lack of volume and grunt and the guitar style neck all add up and made them not right for me.
I see little need for quick neck adjustment other than for travel purposes i.e take off the neck however personally there would be no way I would spend the ammount a Nechville costs for what would essentially be a beater to keep my eye in whilst away.
The idea of the flux-capacitor is of interest to me (having enjoyed the fingerboard so much) however I would be slightly woried about the way the vibrations would carry through the neck (which is important for sound in my opinion) I'll have to look into the idea at some point.
Happy Pickin''

chris- it's all in the setup.
my phantom was generally quieter than my other banjos and much mellower and i thought i had it set up right. i suspected though that i wasn't getting all i could out of it so i took it to tom when he, al and tedd were traveling through my area. tom listened to me play and then set it up and the volume, clarity and tone after that were amazing. no longer is my phantom the quiet one in my little collection of banjos.
those that didn't cut through in the jam you mention probably just need the head tightened is my thought. those nechvilles can get REALLY loud if the head is tight.

And the sound man remarked on how well he liked my banjo's sound.
