Anyone have thoughts on its playability? Low action? (As compared with other banjos in its price range.) Thanks.

Any banjo can have low action. it is easy to achieve. As to the playability of this model, that is hard to say without actually playing it. The B17 is a upper end Asian banjo and looks real nice. However not all instruments that appeal to the eye sounds or plays good. The only way to determine anything about it is to actually play it or have someone you know play it.

You really don't want or need "low action" on a banjo. By low action, I mean electric guitar type action. Banjo strings are much smaller and floppier than guitar strings and the scale is significantly longer. Very low action will lead to buzzing and lousy tone. I have played a banjo set up with really (too-) low action. It sounded really bad. It was probably setup by a guitar kid at a general music store. He did not know what we was doing.

The banjo strings are so easy to press to the fingerboard compared to, for example, an acoustic guitar with medium strings, that you don't need to have them really low.

Hey bookish,

What's you budget? Are you loooking at a new B-17 or used?

I loved my B-16 until I got my RB-250 and cannot go back... no comparision, not even close. Perhaps a used Goldstar or Recording King would be a better purchase..... or save a bit more to buy one of these new??
