i was wondering if anybody has used the schalling d tuners. if so, what's your opinion on them. i know they will not be as good as the real keith tuners, but are they worth $80 a set? Thanks in advance. Renofan52

Keiths are not just better than Schallers....they're much, much better....and more reliable. I've used both, and IMO, Keith is the way to go.

This topic comes up repeatedly. Keiths are by far a superior product. However, at $200 a pop not everyone could afford them, especially on a cheaper banjo. Schaller have has issues with thier manufacturing over the years but apparently it has been resolved. There are many folks who have the Schallers and are happy with the performance, others not so. One thing about buying new is that if there is an issue with them they can be returned.

Agreed. I have both. The Schallers have dead spots, rough spots, they slip, they don't set right and they have stupid-looking buttons.. Besides, if your Keith tuners need maintenance, Bill will fix them for you. I don't know where you'd send Schallers an how long it would take to fix or replace them

Keiths are about twice as much, but last forever, whereas Schallers are prone to break down in a year or two and will never feel as smooth and silky as a Keith. BTW, I moved this to the current forum, where it fits more properly.

I bought the Schallers 2nd hand. But I was wondering if anyone has a copy of the instructions for them.
Or if I got hold of instructions for the Keiths would they do?

Many thanks in advance.

As I've said many times when this topic comes up,I've used Shallers for over twenty years and never had any problems, In my opinion you've got to ask yourself is it worth buying expensive Keith tuners for the amount of times your actually going to use them.

In reality you will use them each and every time you tune up. After reading many a discussion on this subject I sprung for the Keith's becaause I didn't want to deal with the hit and miss possibilities of Shallars. Keith's are good, I knew they were going to be good when I bought them and I know they will last longer than me.

Me too. I have a 20+ year old set of Schallers that have worked flawlessly on my old masterclone. I got them because I could afford them at the time with the intention of "upgrading" to Keith tuners when I could. I just never had to.

Of course, now on my main banjo I have Keith tuners.

I bought a set of Keiths in the mid-'70s, used. They worked well then and continue to now, have only needed a little oiling over the years and they have outlived a fewof my banjos; I've put this set on each of my main playing bluegrass banjos as I went from one to the next.

In my playing style lately I don't really use them often for effect tuning, but they make great regular tuners too.

Best,
