there's been several threads that discussed mods to goodtime banjos. here's one that might help. Tim's "save the banjo" website has a section showing mods and one of them is the peghead recut.

Go to the library and check out "Constructing a 5-String Banjo" by Roger Siminoff or "Making Musical Instruments" by Irving Sloane. Both have full size peghead templates.

Here's a freehand headstock I did on a Banjo-Tam, a very similar headstock. I filled the pegholes with dowel, glued on veneer, redrilled the pegholes. I heard a suggestion to draw 1/2 of your design on a piece of paper and hold a mirror up to it to see what it looks like complete. If you like it, fold the paper over, trace on both sides, mount it on a thin piece of cardboard, and cut the cardboard out to trace on your headstock.

If your looking for a Vega copy, look on ebay for blueprint copies of a Whyte Laydie #2, I see them on there from time to time. Cut out the peghead section and your good to go. They run around $7 to $10. The other option is to find a peghead pic you like on the net. Make sure the pic is taken from directly overhead. Copy the image into Word, resize if needed, then print and cut. The link below is for a Fairbanks Regent on ebay. The peghead shape is the same as the WL.

As pointed out above, somebody came up with a new peghead design for their Goodtime and re-stained the banjo. As I recall, they provided some step-by-step directions. I'm pulling for you. I love my Goodtime II, but it aint' the prettiest thing.

Here's some pics of the pegheads I did for 2 Goodtimes...
The first one is mine, and I plugged the top two tuner holes and re-drilled them for some planetary tuners. After thinking about it when doing my wife's peghead, I didn't bother moving the tuner holes because I was going to use the stock tunersand the peghead turned out just fine. I'll try to find the pattern, I know I have it somewhere. How 'bout shooting me an Email with your address and I'll send you the pattern when I find it.l

Take a 3x5 card and trace the existing headstock, including the location of the peg holes (remove the pegs). Cut it out. Then, as suggested above draw a nice design for one half, cut it out, and fold it over to make a symetrical full size pattern. I've done this twice and it works. You might have to do it more than once to get the one you really like. And don't be afraid to copy from another banjo you might see somewhere. I especially like the SS Stewart design shown on one of the posts above, but I don't know if it will fit a GT.
