I've been taking lessons with Jack for about 10 months now, and he has been tremendously helpful. I have a little bit of background with guitar, so coming to the banjo wasn't a completely foreign experience, but I didn't realize just how different an animal it was until I started with Jack. After just the first week, I felt like I had graduated from a total dilettante to someone who actually knew how to play a bit of bluegrass.
Jack's tab collection is immense and perfectly transcribed, so you'll be learning the canon, and learning it right. Lessons are stress-free, but he'll immediately pick up anything you're doing wrong and help you fix it before it becomes a bad habit. And he'll often back you up on banjo or guitar, which is both fun and beneficial-- jamming is a totally different experience from picking in solitude, and Jack makes sure you get it. To boot, I don't think I've ever had a lesson that did not include some humorous and/or informative anecdote involving such banjo greats as Earl Scruggs and Ralph Stanley!
First rate guy, first rate teacher. If you are in NYC, track him down- you won't be disappointed!
