I never have used a mute before, but recently my wife and kids have taken over my practice area (also known as the living room) just as I am getting ready to practice. I didn't want to carry my banjo upstairs to the bedroom, so I decided to buy a mute and practice in the living room after they decide to go upstairs and go to bed.
I bought Mike's mute and it does a fantastic job! It quiets my banjo to just slightly louder than an unplugged electric guitar. Now I can practice without having to worry about keeping them awake.
I find other times to practice as well, when I don't need the mute, but when I need to practice after they have gone to bed, this one works great!
