Is like pulling teeth..
On certain subjects....
In this case gunsmithing stuff..

It dose not answer the questions..
But rather...it tells me why I should not do the things I am asking about..

I only want the info.....I do not want an opinion from a computer...

Nor do I want the ..um..gentel persuasions... of to do something else with me time...

Google as we once knew it no longer exists. I'm afraid that it's only AI results from now on, but I've never gotten a lecture so far.

The internet, as we knew it, is being scrubbed of information that the powers that be don't want us to know. I betcha.

I've been using chatgpt a fair amount recently to research a number of subjects.

I suspect that some of what you're dealing with might reflect one of several things. First, the chatbot itself - a number of them are known to have biases based on the source materials that were used to build the models.

Second, it absolutely does matter how you enter the prompts, and what questions you ask.

Because I know NOTHING about gunsmithing, I can't offer a specific example that would make sense. But you might try something like the following.

Say your actual question is something along the lines of "How do I keep weeds from growing in my vegetable garden?"

Enter that, and you'll get fairly generalized information - and a lot of it - that might not be specifically relevant to you, along with queries from the bot that can actually help you refine your question so that it's specific to your needs.

However, if your query instead was something like "I live in eastern Connecticut, and have been having problems with weeds in my vegetable garden. What are some techniques and management practices that have been successful in my area?

In other words, if you ask it for an answer that's specific and avoids any potential value judgments, you might be more successful.

Or you could just switch services. Google's biases were well established prior to their AI bots...

I've found that asking Google AI is v-e-r-y similar to asking a question in a BHO thread ... and a lot of life in general.  I ask Google for a link to ________________ .   Instead of just giving me a straightforward answer [i.e. provide a  link, or say they can't] they go into explanations, possible explanations, work-arounds, yada, yada, yada.   C'est la vie??

Having said that, my limited experience with ChatGPT has been better'n ^^.

After many deflecting answers it finally said.. ( wrote)..yes..it has but requires technical machining..

No "Ship"...Sherlock.... :0/

I only want technical n ..honest ..answers..to me queries..

You might have better luck searching youtube? Sometimes a hassle to wait through commercials and all the other BS creators jabber on about but a good way to find info and tips from real people who been there and done it.

You are exactly right Skip.

It also helps if you are generally familiar with what you are asking, maybe not knowing the exact answer but knowing a little about the subject.  I recently asked for some information about my aunt and uncle whom both graduated from Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC.  MY uncle was the quarterback on the football team in the mid 1930's and I mentioned to Chat that he had met his wife while they were students there.  They wrote me back and said that was impossible, as Presbyterian did not admit women until 1965.  I sent the information to their son, my cousin, so he sent me back a photo of his mother, my aunt, in the 1935 Presbyterian College yearbook.  I sent the photo to Chat in which they apologized for the error and admitted I was correct. (lol .... I accepted their apology)

I imagine any information regarding guns, medicine, legal issues, etc., they are very careful about providing much information, especially anything very specific.  They might answer a question like "what is the availability of Winchester 32-20 ammunition, or is .44-40 a popular caliber", but probably hesitant to give advice much beyond that.

Further to Anthony's ^^ post, don't the online forums/chat groups get quite specific?

[I'm f-a-r from knowing much about computer/internet things, but I do recall a few years back of looking for some specific info re. a "charging problem" (?) with an '08 Trailblazer and being led to an "owners group" where guys seem quite willing to share experiences and give advice.   IIRC something similar happened regarding an old roto-tiller I had/have.]

I exclusively use Duck Duck Go. You can choose if you want a standard or A.i. search.

In another forum, the gang was having fun looking up their own name or handle from one forum or another. I was enthused until I looked up my own. As it turns out, I'm a non-person. I asked DW about it. She says,"Do I know you?"

Google, in all its wisdom, said: hey, let's replace searches (our primary source of ad revenues) with the AI bot we spent hundreds of billions developing. Which meant, of course, no more ad revenues...

Maybe Google should have asked ChatGPT some questions before going forward with this idiot idea.

Just curious about what Google was suggesting, were they referring to safety issues, legal issues, or "guns are bad" issues, or?

It just p****footed around the info..that it had..all the time..

Did not say guns are bad.. but it did sujest   other calibers..

Who really knows why it behaves like that..

The last answer it gave..

Actually did give up the info I requested... (that it had or knew all the time)

N.. then explaind that it would require  skill..

i find that people do that very thing..

why they withhold certin info on certin subjects i dunno..

Remember it was programed by people..probly with a lot of common biases....

As atleast to me...it sounded like every gun wrighters opinion that I have ever read...  they do not give real dry info..but offer thier .."expert opinions "

Most likely  under the premise of ..for your own good...

Otoh...there have been a very few gunsmiths that I have read or met that will give raw info..n then add thier opinion..

.22 long rifle barrel used for a center fire cartridge  is a good example...

Will it work...yes..( very well)..I know .. if you work within its limmits..

Will it be frowned upon..yes..or be declared..impractical.. by most..

As there is no real commercial advantage to it..

Well, wildcatting cartridges and amateur gunsmithing has to sound like an insanely dangerous hobby to some, so I can understand the caution. This is a case where you were the expert, not the AI. I admire your skill.
