Earlie this year I was able to purchase this banjo. I have never seen one here in all of my life. When I pulled it down, I noticed that it had a steel rod fitting inside the top of the tone ring. It definitely had to be there because without it, the tone ring would misfit on the rim. When I got it, I thought the peghead shape look 'off'. However, I looked on line at Gibson banjos being made at that time and saw that peghead shape was in used in some models of Gibson banjos.
Can anyone advise just why the build would include this rod and was it used on the Gibson's of the time worthy of being copied?
