Howdy,

I’m working on a scholarly project on Intermountain Guitar & Banjo in Salt Lake City. I’m hoping to track down banjos built by Leonard Coulson and speak with their current owners to learn more about the instruments and the people behind them.

If you happen to own a banjo built by Leo, or have any information about his banjos, I’d love to hear from you. I’d also be glad to hear about your experiences with and memories of the shop or anything else you think might be relevant to this history.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I own a Vega Tubaphone with a conversion neck made by Leo Caulson, or at least I am pretty sure I do. Not sure if you are interested in that branch of his work, but you are welcome to DM me.

I think Coulson might have made more conversion necks, than complete banjos.

Thanks for the reply! I should have clarified that I’m interested in his conversion necks, too. I’m hoping to track down more of his work and hear from folks who own these instruments.

I have a Vegaphone Professional converted by Providence Guitar & Banjo. I believe the work was made by Leonard Coulson while he was with them.

I lived in Lincoln Park R.I. in the late 70s and loved visiting Michael Allison at PG&B.
He spoke of Leonard making his own tube and plate flanges with copper tubing.

One of my banjo regrets was seeing a Coulson 5 string flathead at Buckdancer's Choice for $900 and not going home with it.
