My dad died some fourteen years ago and I've been thinking about him. I was texting back and forth with my son out in LA and we were coming up with Daleisms, which were all his sayings. He grew up dirt poor. He and mom bought a farm with the last pennies they could scrape up and a thirty year mortgage. A few years later he bought the neighboring farm. Ten years later he paid them both off. Then when my brother-in-law wanted to get into farming, my dad handed the farm over to him and started a small, but seccessful construction company. He did well for himself. My mom used to tell me my son and I both inherited his attitude So I just felt like sharing some Daleisms. Im sure we all have inherited words to live by.
On success:
Success is where opportunity and preparation come together, the slow cat never catches a rat.
Work:
Work is hard, but for some people thinking smart is harder. (Make of that one what you will.)
Either get out front and lead, or get in the back and follow, but just get out of my way.
The guy signing your paycheck is always right.
Money:
Going cheap doesn't buy value.
I've been poor and I've been rich, and the only thing worse than being poor is having money and living poor.

My mammy passed on more life lessons (?) than my dad.... a couple of random ones from who-knows-how-many: Treat a lady like a lady, even if she isn't. and, The world would be a much better place if we had as much respect to the living as we do for the dead.
Re. scrapng pennies together to buy land ... my dad told us about a neighbour offering to sell him a quarter section for a thousand dollars. [Dunno what the actual value was back then, but for sure it would have been a deal.] Alas, as my dad put it: "It didn't make any difference... I didn't even have a thousand cents."
Gramp on the Grange.
"People think going to those Grange meetings will get them into Heaven."
When tourists told Gramp where in the world they were from he would often say,"Well, you're somewhere, now."
When I might ask "Why don't lobsters crawl into a crab trap?" he would say "Don't matter why...it just is."
