I don't know what fortune brought East Nash Grass to upstate NY in the Hudson River Valley this weekend, but WOW! (Saugerties NY) I had only heard the band at distance at a bluegrass festival. I knew they were really sharp, but all my expectations were exceeded. WOW.

I HOPED they would not be plugged in, and they weren't. Playing a chapel converted to a concert space, hold roughly 100. (Sold out, by the way). Very very progressive/jam band show. I was familiar with Corey Walker (banjo), Maddie Denton (fiddle) and Harry Clark (mando). Didn't recognize the bass player and guitar man, both young fellers and pretty stoic characters who did their jobs fine.

Sitting in the front row watching Corey Walker play all night with his eyes closed pretty much melted my face, and you know I'm a hard core traditionalist. He's extremely expressive. Played some of the wildest stuff I ever saw, most of it way beyond my comprehension -- at times playing "atonally" I guess. Maddie is an astounding fiddler, singer and choreographic athlete, with a great smile. Harry also supremely talented and expressive. The guitar man (Durham? from KY) took very good T Rice style breaks. I loved they way they slung off "Otto Wood the Bandit"!

The crowd LOVED it. Mostly older folks too.

Then they were off to Vermont to do a show in Ben & Jerry Land.

Anybody know what Corey Walker plays for a banjo? It looked like a two piece flange Granada with a conversion neck missing the MASTERTONE block, and a double cut peghead. He got such a variety of tones out that thing; from soft as flannel, to machine gun fire. Stunning banjo powers.

Listening to their new CD right now, that one the award at IBMA Thursday. Very good music. It sounds fine, but doesn't express the seeming abandon, power and trance state of their stage show.

Here’s Corey with David Grier & co. ,,, playing some kind of top tension. His second break knocks me out.

I rewrote my post today and posted it as above. I couldn't find my original post. I got a note from the Boss that it had been moved to Other Banjo Related. So that's why essentially the same post appears twice. One written yesterday, one written today.

But I still want to know if anyone can tell me what banjo Corey plays.

Sorry for the time warp.
