I also read somewhere that Doug, when he was young, went to Earl’s house for a visit.
Before the Dillards took their famous cross country trip to California and International fame, I had the pleasure of hearing them when the old time square dance players took a break.
This was around 1957 - 1958 in downtown Salem, MO, their hometown.
Wish I had payed more attention to Doug Dillard's playing, but I was more interested in trying to get a certain red headed farm girl to dance with me.
I was recently looking thru a bluegrass unlimited magazine with an article on the Dillard's and it said that Doug 's parents drove him to Earls house and he bought a set of d tuners and Earl installed them for Doug.

yeah ok.... a old friend of mine who has passed on now had a music store in greensboro and he and earl were friends... he had a framed letter from earl talking about a banjo he traded dave out of years and years ago. had it hanging right beside the front counter. i wonder what happened to that letter now. he was the guy who had #1 in the batch earl and sonnys granadas came from that crowe ended up getting before he died.
