Hi all. Been a long time since my last visit. Been quite a few banjos come and go since then. Buy em, play em, sell em.

Today a senior where I play brought out a mountain banjo the he had built. Gave it to me. Its quite nice. Needs strings. I am thinking nylon. Advice??

I'm for nylon.

Richard K. Smith of Comer, GA, used to make a few very fine ones a year. He sold them with fishing line which he also packaged in sets.

I think that the well-founded criticisms of fishing line become irrelevant once you're talking about mountain banjos. However, the trial-and-error required to get the gauges you like will end you up with over a thousand lifetimes worth of string.
