Should I buy the 8-string "banjolele" or the $1K Gumby Goodtime?

I realize they're not being made anymore, but really, $1000?

It is only about 3x market for a Gumby.  IDK who evaluates or prices these things, but it's probably the same person that obviously does not know the difference between a ukulele and a mandolin.

I’ve seen this quite often. Guitar Center folks just look up the price of a new Goodtime, do whatever math they do, and walla, a price. They have no clue what a Gumby, Goodtime II or Goodtime special is. The only positive aspect of this, is that someone probably got a pretty good trade in value on it. But, Guitar Center also loves to deal, and they do listen. I’ve conversed with them on occasion, and gotten very reasonable counter offers. And, when things don’t sell, the price comes down. Put it on your watch list, and if they haven’t found a sucker in the next 6 months or so, the price will eventually get to a reasonable amount. If it still doesn’t sell, it could get listed as part of an occasional used gear sellout, and be a pretty good deal. I watched my Deering Sierra for over 6 months, and it started at over $2300, and I finally bought it for $998. It had a gross head on it, a crap bridge, and had very undesirable photos, so I knew it was a good one to watch.

I looked at the Guckert banjo mandolin while in Greenville the other day. I hope GC did not do the setup on it. the nut was not even close to being seated properly and it majorly needed a neck set--which might not be too hard as there was no dowel system. The internal tone ring was novel in how it was mounted. It had an approximate 10 inch head, so little motivation for me to do a conversion to a 5 string neck. I will let some other sucker buy it. ;-)

Yes, I probably should have added that it is unplayable.  They are still hanging $2K guitars right up against each other, basically ensuring there will be shop scars.  I also saw some guitars with so much dust under the strings, you wonder if anyone ever cleaned them.
