I hadn't thought of this for years,but lately it's come back to me.
Dragging the beat is a rhythmic "habit" that my drum teacher/band director talked of in my early school years.
It has to do with starting a measure or a phrase a touch late or slow and catching up to the time to end the phrase in time with everyone else.
There is a feeling of power and resolve in correctly dragging/resolving a rhythmic passage.
