I was given this Keech banjolele at a country music club I play at because they knew I played banjo.
I have been on the net a good part of this morning searching for info on this.
I understand they made 3 grades of instruments A, B &C. From what I can find, this may be an ‘A’ grade.
In the images I have seen, all of them are fitted with friction tuners.
My one looks as if it has had mechanical tuners (guitar open type) fitted at some time due the arrangement of holes on the back of the peghead. However, they usually leave an impression into the finish which this one does not have. The holes look as if they have not been screwed into. Maybe someone started to install and changed their minds.
The serial number on the heel is (as best as my eyes can make out) B1431. I am not sure how their numbering system worked but the last 2 digits could refer to the year.
The current friction pegs fitted are wooden violin type.
There is the customary ‘Alvin Keech’ signature ‘scratched’ into the back. According to one source, he personally ‘signed’ them this way but a pantograph was used later.
There is another name scratched into the back which I am in the process of deciphering. I suspect it may have been perhaps an owner. I can make out what I think is ‘Joan Ray/Roy'? with a cursive ‘W’ and ‘H’ underneath it. that is all.
If anyone can shed more light on this than what I have found, It would be greatly appreciated. Also, an approx. value. I am intending to sell it. The condition is very good with some noticeable scratched on the back of the neck.
It came with a case in much need of repair. I will give it to my daughter who is a seamstress. She is eager to try out on leather
